Dance News.
Here's a taste of things to come. As reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, two of Australia's most high profile DJs - Chris Kross and Pee Wee Ferris - have to pay more than $800,000 in damages after the Federal Court found they illegally used music on CDs sold in Sydney's Tower Record stores. The CDs, which span a period of two years, were found to contain 17 remixed works produced without permission of the original recording artists. While these guys made a profit off the sales of these CDs, I wonder how soon it will be before mixes that are offered for free on websites such as Rave Adelaide and Adelaide Massive come under fire.
Artificial Intelligence hits Earth (the former
Downtown) Easter Sat 26 March. The main room features WetMusik
(Melbourne's Simon Digby and Simon Coyle) on four decks plus
distorted sax, live percussion and effects. They'll be launching
the 'Best of WetMusik' Live CD with giveaways all night. Joining
them is none other than Adelaide's HMC returning after a brief
hiatus from the decks. Other acts include Fenetik, Devious vs
Jorge Watts, Mr S, Ben Watt, Tim Carter, Madness, Lachy Pender,
Simon Booth, Jude Alexander and Phorm.
Easter Sunday (Sun 27 March) has traditionally been the day for big raves, and this year sees one of the biggest names return to St Pauls. Ultraworld celebrate their tenth birthday with Fierce, Pascal and Impact from the UK.
Heaven offers up Mr Timothy and Andy Van
headlining Vicious on Good Friday with three arenas of music
all night. However, that'll just give you a taste for Easter
Sunday when they hold the seven-arena strong Twice As Nice,
with Public Domain and Steve Hill on the decks, alongside a
hearty mix of Adelaide's best. And if that's not enough, the
carpark will be transformed into a carnival, complete with rides,
stalls and food!
Good Friday Acetate presents Alba, D-Jon & Skyver, Jupiter Sound Project (live), Havok, Dusk and B@ch alongside MCs Mennan and G-Swift. The place for this event is Sturt Lacrosse Club, which I hear is one funky little venue complete with chill areas.
At long last Beat Junkie DJ Babu and MC Rakaa
(Dilated Peoples) will hit Australian shores, touring under
the Expansion Team Soundsystem banner at St Paul's on Good Friday
(Fri 25 March). They will be supported by local talent Terra
Firma and The Defenders and DJs Shep, David L, Snare, Dyems
and Mark 1.
HouseMaster C, T-Bot, and John Citizen will be set to ramp up the dirty house on Easter Sun 27 March at MojoWest.
This is no April fools prank: Echo & Fabric
join forces to present a very special event on Fri 1 April.
Gwill Morris, responsible for some of the most forward thinking
electronic music over the past few years as Main Element and
Ogenki Clinic, will be playing an exclusive to Adelaide retrospective
of his 10 year career at Soda Room. Joining him for this will
be Adam White, the new shining light in the trance scene, along
with locals Mal Chia, Solace, Matt Parker, and S.Wicks.
And if you think DJs love living the high life, flying around here there and everywhere, partying with hot supermodels and funky drug dealers, think again. A survey from England's City & Guilds, a UK based training organisation, has revealed that only 13% of those labelling themselves "DJs" say they're happy in their work. One reason could be the hours they have to work, with surveys published in the UK's Guardian newspaper suggesting that night-working is "more damaging to health than 20 cigarettes a day". Given that a lot of DJs also work during daylight hours in record stores or for record labels, it's not that surprising given the survey was based on things like pay rates, stress and whether they were their own boss.
