Adelaide Uni O'Ball
Adelaide University Cloisters, Saturday 26 February
Adelaide
University's O'Ball had a pretty hot line-up for those into their
pop-rock or pop-punk kind of outfits, given the headlining acts in
particular. A slight mishap prior to departing for the O'Ball meant
that not only did I completely miss The Cops, which I was downright
upset about, I also missed most of The Hot Lies set - another band
I was keen on seeing. Prior to that I'd obviously missed Mirrorline
and The Panda Band, both of whom I wanted to a glimpse of having not
seen them before, and also Tokyo Story, about whom I know nothing.
Evermore quickly took to the stage once The Hot Lies had departed,
with an impressive yet also slightly disappointing set: impressive
in their professionalism and ease on stage for such a young trio,
but disappointing because it felt as though vocalistguitarist Jon
Hume was on the verge of breaking out of his somewhat shy shell and
into the passionately full-on side of things, but he never really
got there. I almost felt like yelling at him to just let loose. However,
the three piece put on a great show, evidenced by a raucous crowd
and rapturous applause, especially with their hit Too Late.
Gerling were in their dirty rock mode. Having never been a huge fan, I can't say the performance converted me, although one girl nearby almost had an orgasm after every song (I'd hazard a guess and say her ecstasy wasn't of the natural sort).
Lastly for me were the three piece from Perth, Eskimo Joe. Now a touring
five piece, the Western Australians put on a fantastic set. Their
professional yet casual and enthusiastic ambience proved perfect for
the O'Ball atmosphere.
Playing songs from 'Girl' as well as most tracks off 'From The Sea', lead singer and bassist Kav Temperley also indulged in a few solo-cover-segues, including Rough Diamonds by fellow West Australians End of Fashion. I love watching these guys live. They've evolved into a great band with an awesome live show, which stands them in great stead for a healthy future.
