Junior Sanchez.
At only 24 years of age, Junior Sanchez' career has already
spanned ten years. At an age when most musos are just getting
off the ground, Sanchez is comfortably riding the wave of success
and in this case, riding it all the way from his hometown of
New York City to Adelaide for the Two Tribes Festival.
"This will be my third time to Australia. I love it. It's awesome. If it wasn't so far away I'd go there more often," a clearly enthusiastic Sanchez says of his impending tour down under. With talent like his and being known around the dance music circuit, sometimes gigs just fall directly at your feet: being included in the line up for Two Tribes was no exception. "My management spoke with the organisers and they just selected me to be a part of it," he shrugs.
On being asked to describe his style of music Sanchez says, "I don't. It's just good dance music. I don't tend to put it into genres. I can't do that. I never really do because I'm not into genres. So I can't really describe it; it's just amazing electronic music. That's the problem with [people asking] 'what's your style?' People break up electronic music in to sub-genres: 'I play tech house, progressive house, trance and techno'," he sighs. "That's what divides the dance community. We don't need that because it makes it smaller."
Sanchez relishes in the opportunity to be a part of events like Two Tribes as he personally gets a lot from the experience "I get a lot of my self expression out. I get to hang with great people, meet amazing people and go to countries that I don't get to visit very often. I get inspired. I don't take anything for granted."
Sanchez has been quoted as saying 'Music should make you move and at the same time should also make you think.' I was curious to learn what thoughts he felt could be provoked from listening to doof-doof tunes.
"Essentially everyone thrives on the same thing, good music," he explains. "Whether you're in Eastern Europe or Japan. It might be different if you're in Afghanistan though!" he laughs tentitively. "I want people to say 'wow, this is amazing!' or 'I've never heard this before!' Those are the thoughts that should be going through your mind: a smile, an emotion or a laugh. That's what it should do. It shouldn't make you be serious. You're in a dance world dancing to dance music. It should make you feel good."
In a time where it's easy to get caught up in doom and gloom, Sanchez tries to see the flip side and make that the main focus of his performances.
"We're not in the dark times here, we're not living in an age of sadness. That's why people go out, to forget about the shitty day they had today. They just want to go in to a pub and let loose. That's what going to a discotheque, concert or festival does. It's escapism!" he enthuses.
The music industry can seem superficial at time, especially in the world of the superstar DJ, but Sanchez blows that myth out of the water with his down to earth attitude and grounded approach to making music.
"I make music first and foremost for me. I do it because I love it and if there are people who enjoy what I do and there are fans because of it; well, then that's a plus. I don't wake up in the morning and go into the studio to make a record hoping that a DJ, one of my peers will play it. That's not why I make music. I do it because that's my passion and that's what I do. I'll do it for the rest of my life because that's who I am."
The feeling of walking out on stage to roars and cheers knowing that everyone in that room is there because they want to see you couldn't possibly be matched. Sanchez concurs. "Obviously it feels amazing when you get into it and love it. It's one of the best feelings in the world, next to a climax! It's awesome. It's orgasmic! Everyone has some type of passion in their lives. Whether it's eating chocolate or whatever. Everyone has something that they say is better than sex. Whether you're a rock star or pop star or a DJ or whatever. Robbie Williams must have climaxes everyday of his life. He has people crying!"
