After touring the country with the Big Day Out and performing in New Zealand as part of the festival, Grinspoon are on the road once again. Guitarist Pat Davern reveals the band wants to build on their performances from the Big Days Out.
"I think it's just because it's probably going to be the last tour for this record. All the singles are out now so this is the last time fans will be able to see us before we lock ourselves away and start doing our new record," the guitarist says.
Given the Grinners haven't had much time off touring so far this year, Davern explains the band doesn't write a lot of their music on the road. "Mainly it all happens when the pressure's on, when we're ready to do it, but we'll have a lot of stuff already done."
With drummer Kristian Hopes basing himself in Brisbane, lead singer Phil Jamieson living in Sydney with numerous Melbourne visits, and both bassist Joe Hansen and himself in Sydney, Davern says the band comes together for rehearsals and songwriting periods. An example of this was the pre-production of 'Thrills, Kills And Sunday Pills', where the band recorded some demos at Southern Cross University's Lismore campus.Aside from the fact the band originated from the northern New South Wales town before migrating south, Davern is straight to the point about why they chose Lismore for the demos.
"The [Southern Cross] studio was compatible with the studio we use down in Sydney," he says, "so we could just take it straight from there, plug it in down in Sydney and work on it some more."
With their last tour for 'Thrills...' the band plays in Loxton for the inaugural Handpicked festival before heading to Perth to play the Rock-It Festival the following day. Davern says the band are looking forward to playing in Loxton, given they've never played there before, but also because they co-headline the festival with Melbourne-based rockers Shihad. With both bands also set to tour together on the Show Pony Express Tour, Davern is enthusiastic about the Adelaide show in late April.
"It'll be fun! It's always good rock'n'roll, you know what I mean," he explains. "And we're just playing one show in each city basically, doing bigger kind of arenas, and we're going to try and put on a bit of a big show."
When I mention the capacity at the Entertainment Centre, where the band is scheduled to play, is over 10,000, Davern laughs, and says: "I think we'll probably have it in intimate mode; how does that sound?"
