The Roys
The Roys
In-Fidelity/Shock
It was the first morning of the Falls Festival when I sauntered out of the big top, having just witnessed a great set by Ash Grunwald, and first heard The Roys greeting me from the main stage. I must admit I didn't really check them out at the time as I think I was soon off in search of a yiros. However, upon their self-titled six-track CD-EP, I had a chance to sit down and have a proper listen.
Frontman Felix Juliff delivers his vocals with a sneer on fast-paced
opener Car whilst torturing his scratchy chords to good effect
throughout the catchy, slide-guitar riddled Who Got What Mamma
Said. This track sets the tone for the rest of the disc steering
towards a more laid-back feel, although the harmony drenched 60's
pop of Til Next Time evokes a very Who-ish vibe. The sleazy
blues of closer Haile Bop was my personal fave, combining a
nice old toe-tapping riff with some kick-ass guitar solo action and
some great lyrics to boot ("Psychokinesis of Jesus", indeed ).
Elsewhere the lyrics may sometimes border on the lame ("I wanna take you down to the lake / We can sit in my house where everything is fake"), but hey, it is rock'n'roll. The production is slick all round, albeit seemingly grubbed up for that authentic sleazy rock sound. So if you like your rock laid-back and bluesy you may just want to check out The Roys.
