Social Distortion
Sex, Love And Rock'n'Roll
Timebomb/Shock
Back in 1978 - before punk went money and before the genre demanded
black dye jobs, piercings, pouts and at least one token fat dude with
weird hair leaping and running around like a hamster - Social Distortion
were spawned from a community which required no approval from anyone.
There is nothing "cool" about 'Sex, Love And Rock'n'Roll'. It is the
real thing - transparently simple, but undeniably credible, gutter
punk with hideously catchy riffs - but it appears that it's no longer
all about vocalist/guitarist Mike Ness' infamous excesses and rage
of the 80s. With songs like Live Before You Die and Footprints
On My Ceiling, reflecting on love, friendship, and loss, it seems
the band are setting their demons free once and for all.
In a similar way, Don't Take Me For Granted, written about
the band's ex-rhythm guitarist Dennis Danell, who died in 2001, is
emotional, thoughtful, and just plain mature. Without a doubt though,
the standouts are Reach For The Sky, Highway 101, Winners
And Losers, and Faithless. Beware poor imitations: these
tracks are charged with greatness, heart, and balls, and are brilliant
in every way. Ness' signature sandpaper voice and those screaming
guitars are especially memorable on Highway 101, and fans should
know that Social Distortion have in general come up with another stunner.
'Sex, Love And Rock'n'Roll' is uncompromising, but also very personal
and vivid. Also, check out the wicked album cover. A is for Awesome.
