The Breakdown EP Carus & The True Believers
The Breakdown EP
Independent

One of Australia's hardest working, up-and-coming artists, Carus (and his entourage of True Believers) have returned with a five track mini album that is nothing short of beautiful. It can be hard to pigeonhole this group in to any one genre because they cover so much musical ground: blues, folk and reggae influences are equally strong. Vocals blend harmoniously with percussion, bass, lapsteel, violin, drums and harmonica, making for a balanced record that brings out the beauty of each contributing instrument, not letting anything fade in to the background.

Breakdown, first heard on the 'Long Nights Are Gone' album, has been re-recorded to make it even more upbeat and funky. What A Lover Is For tugs at your heartstrings with lyrics like "Sometimes this life gets too much / sometimes I feel like I'm cracking up / when I need the human touch / the touch of your hand / a lover that understands." A softer side is explored with River Red, Sky Blue and When I Think Of You and the final Lost is a reflective song about the loss of a love. All five songs have a relationship theme but it's not done in such a way that sounds pathetic or that you're hearing a bleeding heart. If anything, given the subject matter and the way it's sung, you want to listen more intently to see how things work out.

One this that's immediately apparent is just how lyrically strong these songs are. They sound as though Carus has taken a snapshot of his life and put it to music, and his raspy voice and raw vocals complement his words perfectly.

Part of the appeal of Carus' music is its organic nature resulting in an EP that doesn't sound over-produced or stale. If you haven't yet discovered Carus & the True Believers this is the perfect way to test the waters. If you are already a fan, you'll realise that the lads just keep getting better and better.
