Puff 'n' Stuff.
There has apparently been some confusion locally about the status of August Falls but Puff - who hates confusion with a white-hot passion - can definitively confirm that the band will continue, although singer/songwriter/guitarist Cole Thomas is the only one of the current lineup to remain. The 'Pop Princess' lineup are playing their final show on Fri 18 March, while Thomas puts a new 'Falls together for the next recording and another US tour mid-year. Consider yourself told, y'all.
On the subject of visits to Splitsville,
former SA types Snap! Crakk! have announced they're calling
it a day with some final shows at the end of March in their
adopted hometown of Melbourne. "There are no hard feelings"
they assure Puff. What, they couldn't pop back for one last
gig? The second they move away, they forget...
Let's turn to happier subjects with some CD launch information: like, for example, the launching of Heather Frahn's new CD-EP 'Acoustic Energy', which is happening on Fri 11 March at the Jade Monkey, with support from Dylan Ferguson and Ria Loof.
Poppi Doser is best known around Adelaide
for her acoustic performances, but she's now gotten into the
digital arts and will be launching her debut electronica CD
'Autumnal Ephemeral' at the Bliss Organic Cafˇ on Sun 13 March
from 11am. The music will be accompanied by a film made by Ms
Doser and Sukhmani Khorana, while Bryce Doudle will also be
there to lay down some acoustic guitar work. Oh, they'll even
throw in a light breakfast to boot!
Frequent Seahorse have also finished their debut CD - it's called 'Moongear' and it's getting comprehensively launched at Supermild on Thurs 17 March, with DJ Mike Goodfellow on the decks.
Snap To Zero are also on the launching trail
with their new magnus opus due to get launched - and launched
well - at Jive on Sat 23 April.
New metal types Mythica are launching their self-titled debut at Le Rox (Bridgeway Hotel) on Sat 19 March, with an all-star lineup of Raven Black Night, Juggermath, Murder Hill, The Loving Tongue and Sarsekem in support.
And of course Bad Girls Of The Bible are launching their 88
Keys/Simple Mistakes 7" single at Jive on Sat 26 March,
with Mirrorline and Pharoahs in tow.
Speaking of Pharoahs, they're holding a special gig at the SEAS Gallery on Hindley St on Sat 19 March, along with fellow noiseniks Straight To Video and Artax Mission.
Having enjoyed their recent visit for the
Adelaide Uni O-Ball, The Cops are coming back for another round;
this time at the Enigma Bar with Russian Teammate and Bad Girls
Of The Bible.
Planning to go to the Metal Mulisha motorcross show with 28 Days at the Entertainment Centre on Thurs 24 March? Well, you'll be making an exciting change of plans: the Adelaide leg of the tour has been cancelled. However, if you're prepared to make the trip east, there's an Adelaide-only 2-for-1 deal for the Melbourne show at the Rod Laver Arena on Fri 1 April: give Ticketek a call on 132849 and explain you're from Adelaide. Refunds are available through Bass.
Stuff from Puff: No Stuff would be complete
without the news that someone or other had reformed, but Puff
wasn't expecting to hear that the original lineup of Dinosaur
Jr was getting back together to play at the Fuji Rock Festival
and do a string of UK dates. Given the longstanding antagonism
between frontman J Mascis and bassist Lou Barlow (who quit to
form Sebadoh, and who only recently released the first solo
album under his own name), it couldn't have come at a weirder
time... Of course, in order to reform you have to split up:
so east coast bands Jerk and Three Point Tilt will now be able
to look at reunions down the track, since they've both called
it quits... And word is that Blink-182 are taking an "indefinite
hiatus". Of course, most bands don't take an "indefinite hiatus"
a few days before they're meant to play at an enormous benefit
gig for the victims of the Asian tsunami unless they're unusually
keen to hiate, and Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro
(who was allegedly there when the "indefinite hiatus" was embarked
upon, during a heated backstage argument) rather put his foot
in it when he mourned their permanent and irreconcilable split
in a post on his website, which he subsequently removed. And
the reasons for the split? According to the official press release,
they'll be "enjoying the fruits of their labours with loved
ones." And everyone loves fruits, right?... The new Foo Fighters
album - a double, no less - is set to include appearances by
Josh Homme, Norah Jones and Led Zeppelin alumnus John Paul Jones...
Puff likes to keep you, the readers, abreast on what's happening
in the intersecting world of music and crime. Fortunately, people
like Dizzee Rascal are about the place, getting into scrapes,
being a cheeky monkey, and getting arrested in London for carrying
pepper spray. He's set to answer bail on Fri 8 April, which
is a little inconvenient since he's meant to be playing in Salt
Lake City that night... Of course, whatever UK rappers can do
US rappers can do even more hardcore: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's
Krayzie Bone has a warrant out for his arrest, although it's
on the not terribly cred charge of unpaid child support (over
$US40,000, in fact)... Meanwhile, Static-X's guitarist Tripp
Eisen (aka Tod Salvador) is in jail awaiting charges of sexually
assaulting a 14 year old girl in New Jersey, with investigators
also looking for evidence that he has targeted underage girls
online. It's alleged that Tripp pretended to be a fellow Static-X
fan in message boards, then seduced underage fans. The band
have sacked him with a statement that reads, in part, "Tripp
is currently dealing with personal issues that prohibit him
from being able to fulfill his commitment to the band. No replacement
has yet been chosen"... Then there's when the rock person is
the victim, rather than the perpetrator: Slash's famous black
top hat is being held to ransom after the thief turned down
the $2000 reward for its no-questions-asked return. Apparently
it was lifted from his limo when Velvet Revolver were at the
Grammys. Puff can almost hear eBay crying softly...
Canadian duo Madviolet are paying Adelaide a visit on Thurs 10 March for a show at Jive with The Audreys and Luke Ashby.
And while on the subject of Canadians, Ms
Ember Swift is making her annual-ish pilgrimage south for a
show at Jive on Tues 15 March.
Shred, man! Shred! Joe Satriani will be both cooking and (time permitting) wailing at Thebarton Theatre on Sun 20 March.
Can't wait for the new Cog record? Well,
they're very kindly offering up a free download of their new
radio single Real Life at the Triple J website (www.triplej.abc.net.au)
to tide you over until the release of 'The New Normal' in April
- and they'll be Flinders Uni Tavern on Fri 27 May and the Gov
on sat 28 May!
Daggerz Sound System is back on Thurs 10 March at the Crown & Anchor with screamo types The Paddington Bear Affair and DJ Hermes kickin' it on da decks.
Puff's heard that Missy Higgins' show at
Thebarton Theatre on Sat 26 March has already sold out - so
here's hoping you have your tickets already.
Spealing of selling out, tickets to the Violent Femmes' show at Heaven on Sun 3 April are moving at a healthy lick, so you may want to get your mitts on them sooner rather than later. They're available from dB Magazine.
A similar early-ticket-buying plan regarding
Trans Am's show at Enigma on Sun 27 March would be wise, especially
since the show also features The Fucking Champs, and is therefore
likely to involve the various Trans Champs/Fucking Am permutations
that those bands so enjoy embarking upon.
All-female Japanese art-rock comes to the Crown & Anchor on Thurs 24 March when Metal Chicks (featuring SuGar from Buffalo Daughter) and Belters* (featuring members of 00100) bring the underground sounds to Adelaide for a show with The Ramonettes.
Puff Health Corner: Again, this fortnight
proves that it's a dangerous job, this rock star lark. For example,
Edwyn Collins (former Orange Juice lead singer, best known in
Australia for his single A Girl Like You) has just undergone
emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage and remains in a critical
condition in hospital... Whitney Houston, meanwhile, was whisked
to hospital in Paris after suffering severe gastroenteritis
on a flight to Europe, possibly from food poisoning... Meanwhile,
Queens Of The Stone Age have cancelled their entire European
tour after Josh Homme started coughing up blood in Paris (what
is it with Paris and US rock people?). Doctors diagnosed a severe
lung infection and the shows were immediately pulled. The band
insist they'll make up the shows as soon as possible. Meanwhile,
there are rumours circulating that sacked bassist Nick Olliveri
might be back in the Queens' fold sooner rather than later...
Then there are those whose health isn't even that good: vale
exotica artist Martin Denny, Hawaiian mood music master and
lounge music artiste, who passed recently at age 93, and Joe
Carter, the final living member of the orginal lineup of legendary
country music dynasty The Carter Family, who died of cancer
on Wed 2 March aged 78. Rest well, gents.
Billy February is joining forces with drum ensemble Djebassa for a night of beats and ballads at the Singing Gallery in McLaren Vale on Sat 12 March.
Forza Liandri: crazy name, crazy band - or
so Puff assumes, completely without any sort of basis for doing
so. In any case, these Victorian hardcore types are playing
their first Adelaide shows at the Exeter on Hindley St on Fri
11 March (with This City Dynamite) and the Enigma Bar on Sat
12 March (with Horsell Common and The Realist Few).
Some last minute tickets have been released for the Green Day and Simple Plan EntCent show on Sat 12 March, but Puff doesn't guarantee they'll still be available by the time you read this: buy like the wind!
There are a couple of particularly excellent
gigs happening shortly for a couple of very worthy causes: the
first is for the Asian tsunami and features an A-1 lineup of
Red Monika, MKB, Business As Usual, Full Blood Commandos, Boh
Monkey, Uberstomp and Hedra at the Lizard Lounge on Sat 19 March.
The other show is Sat 26 March, again at the Lizard Lounge, and again featuring a superb lineup of MKB, Little Ice Age, The Weary Dunlops, Spatial Monkey, New Pollutants, Boh Monkey, Paper Tiger and Business As Usual, but this time raising money for Sudanese refugees. It's causetastic!
Don't forget that Gyroscope will be a-rockin'
and a-rollin' at the Enigma Bar on Fri 11 March, supported in
excellent style by Wendy Icon and Line Of Departure.
Come on, that's got to be plenty of reasons - if anything, too many reasons - for you to...
