Double Dragon
+ Equal Minded, Murder Hill, Later That Night
Enigma Bar, Fri 11 Feb

The launch of local metal band Double Dragon's CD 'Have Them Destroyed' proved a most successful affair, the venue filled almost to capacity by the time opening act Equal Minded took the stage. That band did a good job getting everyone warmed up with a lot of heads banging: the members setting a good example by really throwing themselves into their performance. The vocalist proved particularly manic: jumping, somersaulting and engaging in all manner of other crazy antics on stage.

The second band of the night, Murder Hill, seemed particularly popular. A five-piece whose line-up includes three of the four members of the now-defunct Cloth Tape (one now sporting an enormous mohawk), it played a few Cloth Tape songs - Hell Is Not A Place and Just Another Martyr - during its set as well as some newer pieces, and also elicited an enthusiastic response from the crowd. The next act up, Later That Night, kept the show's momentum going, also putting in an energetic and solid set.

As well-received as the groups before it were, it was headlining act, Double Dragon, that generated the most spirited behaviour from the crowd, a mosh starting up almost immediately among those at the front of the stage when the band launched into its set. While this was all good fun for the most part, there was one fool in the middle of it who seemed intent on punching anyone who got near her; while such silliness is all well and good at hardcore shows, I suppose, it was something of a pain (in more ways than one!) in this instance. The band themselves put on a performance worthy of the occasion; not only did they prove themselves just as capable as many international groups playing a similar style of music to theirs (Killswitch Engage and Chimaira were two examples that sprung to my mind), but they were also a very imposing presence on stage, particularly in the case of their vocalist Lee. All in all, an enjoyable, if exhausting, night out.
