John Hobson.
1958-2005
On Thursday, February 10, blues singer John Hobson died suddenly at his home. During the course of his career, John fronted a great number of acclaimed acts both in Australia and the UK. These included London's swing revivalists The Phenomenal Pound Puppies, An Acoustic Scandal and Adelaide's Neighbour's Complaint, but it will probably be as the singer and organiser behind Monday's Grace Emily Blues Jam that he will probably be best known locally. John turned this evening into an Adelaide institution and showcased some of the best music seen in Adelaide in recent years.
John was a musician in the purest sense of the word, believing that musicians creating music together was the most important ideal. To people who were lucky enough to see him perform, he will be remembered as an effortlessly natural front-man and a gifted songwriter with a voice that possessed mesmerising conviction and emotion. The things that I'll remember most about John, though, are the things that made him such a unique and wonderful person away from music. I'll remember his sharp and witty sense of humour that would make our regular Friday night get-togethers such a memorable time. I'll remember his giant strides that made it almost impossible to walk beside him without jogging. I'll never forget this tall, well built man with a penchant for champagne who also brewed some of the most amazing beer I've ever tasted. But I guess most of all, I won't forget an amazing and true friend, who was there for me through both the rockiest and most wonderful times of my life. I will miss him immensely.
James Meston
