The Butterfly Effect.

The Butterfly Effect Kurt Goedhart, guitarist for Brisbane' The Butterfly Effect, has stepped off a train in sunny Newcastle hoping to catch a wave on one of his few days off. He's disappointed to find the wind (which blows a gale down the phone line), has brought the kite surfers out.

"That's why the surf's shit; crap bloody wind," Goedhart sighs. "So we're going to go bowling instead."

Bowling? In the world of rock, especially the hard-rock world, it just doesn't seem to right to hear of a group of twenty-somethings enthusing about a day on the bowling green as being an enjoyable substitute for a day out on the ocean. From what Goedhart explains, it's clear the game once seen as being only for those in the over-50 category, is something of a passion for the quartet.

"It's something we got into at The Falls Festival in 2003," he begins. "The album had just come out, and our record company was very happy with us, so I rang up and said 'book us a nice place for New Years',' and they did. They booked us the most expensive place at Lorne. And it was this amazing place; gorgeous rooms, and it was kind of in a U-shape, and in the middle were all these tennis courts and croquet things, and there were a couple of lawn bowls strips.

"And we were going to play tennis, of course, we wouldn't want to play croquet," Goedhart adds. "But it was booked up for like, two hours, and they said you can play lawn bowls for a couple of hours until the tennis courts are available. So we said sweet, and we got up there at about midday. We didn't get off that lawn bowls until 8:30 that night. We were addicted straight away," he says matter-of-fact.

Seeing as they're considering joining their local club, The Butterfly Effect may be seen on the amateur lawn bowls circuit in Brisbane, ready to give the oldies a run for their money.

"It's a really great sport, because we're touring so much all the time, and to get back and then do something as placid as lawn bowls is gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous," he raves. "The contrast is, I think, what makes it quite appealing for us."

At this point, the question comes begging: Despite the clear display of enthusiasm and knowledge (he gives a rundown of the Australian women's team defeating Fiji in a recently televised tournament and the Australian men kicking some Scottish butt): but is Goedhart really serious? "Absolutely," comes the emphatic reply. "I mean, that's just putting an idea in [as to] why we like it so much. I'm not too sure why we like it so much, but maybe that could be it. And plus it is a really skilful game, but we draw the line at watching it on Wide World of Sports on Sundays."

The Butterfly Effect play at Heaven on Sun 27 Feb with Breed 77.
