The Beautiful Girls
Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, Thurs 27 Jan

When I heard The Beautiful Girls were heading back to South Australia for not one, not two but three big nights I could barely contain my excitement (as my poor friend can substantiate after I screamed the good news to her down the phone). However after turning up to the Governor Hindmarsh prepared to bop, groove and get funky, you could imagine my disappointment when all I managed was a pathetic toe tap accompanied by regular yawns and thoughts of 'when is this going to end?'.

I know this sounds awfully harsh, especially if you're a fan (and I'm one of the most devoted) but I swear it's the truth: the show was not up to their usual standard at all.

Let me set the scene. Firstly, there were tables set up where the crowd should've been. Not a good sign. The DJ tried to get things pumping but when his idea of mixing was playing two CDs over the top of each other and fading one out... well, let's just say this crowd wasn't easily fooled.

Clay and Mitchell took to the stage and took up their instruments to big cheers from the audience which grew even more enthusiastic when Matt stepped up to the mic. The set opened with a newie that I hadn't heard before followed by Cash Money, Periscopes and the popular Blackbird and Weight Of The World, but the energy just wasn't there. For me, the quality was in their older tunes but my peers seemed only to react to that which gets airplay; an indication of the bands new popularity, perhaps, but an annoyance when people overlook a bands more accomplished feats.

Perhaps it was just the relentless touring sapping the positive vibes from the guys so they were unable to pump it out like I know they can. I'll still be at their next gig, hoping this one was just a horrible, horrible mistake.
