Goretex
The Art of Dying
Psycho+Logical /Shock
I was ignorant of New York-based rap label Psycho+Logical Records
until quite recently, but it seems to be putting out a lot of original,
new (and, a little unusually for this genre even now, predominantly
white) artists. Goretex is one such artist and 'The Art of Dying'
is his first solo album. Interestingly, according to his bio, Goretex
doesn't listen to hip-hop himself. His musical interests include metal
and "obscure 70's shit", and these seem to have come through in the
material here: the former in the track Blessed Are The Sick which
he performs with label founder Necro; the latter appearing to make
up the music for many of the other tracks.
Like that of other Psycho+Logical artists I have heard, Goretex's
lyrics are very sick, and often quite depressing too. The end of the
world seems to be a favourite theme (in 60:00, which also features
label-mates Sabac and Mr Hyde; Earth Rot; and The Last 100
Days Of Sodom), as do violence and mind control, while pornographic,
homophobic and drug references also abound. As the album cover would
suggest, the artist also has an interest in Satanism, professing to
practice this (with Necro) in the aforementioned Blessed...
(I actually found his purported Satanism quite refreshing; it certainly
makes a welcome change from the rather nauseating hypocrisy of all
those rap artists who brag about their criminal deeds in one track,
only to gush about God in the next.) Surprisingly, while the artist's
raps are frequently ugly in the extreme, the music to which they are
set is often quite beautiful. This is especially the case in the title
track, which also appears to lament all the evil in the world rather
than merely wallow in it.
Of the nineteen tracks that make up this album, six are very short "filler" pieces that comprise samples and/or snippets of music.
While 'The Art of Dying' isn't the best Psycho+Logical release I've heard, it's still very good. Jaded hip-hop fans who think that rap nowadays has become boring and unoriginal should definitely check it out.
