You Forgot It In People
Arts & Crafts/Shiny
Another day, another good record comes out of Canada. 'You Forgot It In People' is truly ambitious in scope. It's also about as schizophrenic an album as you will get. Not really surprising given the way the band has grown from the core duo of Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning to include over ten members, including Evan Cranley from Stars and Emily Haines from indie-pop group Metric.
The introductory ambient dream sequence of Capture The Flag
turns into a cacophony of drums and percussive guitars in KC Accidental.
Almost Crimes sounds like a mish mash of Joy Division, Yeah
Yeah Yeahs, and a hundred other bands in between. It sounds messy,
but it's also one of the best tracks on the record. Cause=Time
is a perfect pop song, yet I dare you to find something else on radio
that sounds like it. Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl,
featuring Haines on vocals, goes beautifully alt-folk. Dave Fridmann-esque
production throughout increases the expansive feel of the album.
'You Forgot It In People' covers a lot of ground, perhaps too much for some. It manages to score on two counts though: it's got instant accessibility, yet it has plenty of scope to grow on you as well. Definitely one of the best releases of late, the only downside here is that it took two years for the album to be released in Australia.
