Metal News.
In an horrific incident that shocked metal fans the world over, Dimebag Darrell was shot by a deranged audience member who reputedly blamed the guitarist for the demise of Pantera. Former fan, 25-year-old Nathan Gale forced his way on stage during Damageplan's opening song and shot 38-year-old Darrell in the head multiple times. Two other audience members and one of the Damageplan road crew were also killed before Gale was fatally shot by police. There has been an outpouring of grief at the senseless murder - undoubtedly one of the worst things to happen in heavy metal history - from fans and musicians, who are holding memorial services around the world.

Vocalist Freddy Cricien had not yet reached his teens when he played his first Madball show in 1988, but by 1994 they had developed a reputation as one of New York City's fiercest hardcore acts, developing a loyal following among both hardcore and punk aficionados. Legal issues forced them to disband in 2000, but after a couple of years off, Madball are back and ready to pick up exactly where they left off. With the release of their new EP 'NYHC', they are back on the road and returning to Australia, having already toured here in 1998. Madball play an all ages show at the Adelaide UniBar on Wed 16 Feb.
Bizarre news item #1: AC/DC singer Brian
Johnson was thrilled to learn that his band's music is being
used by US soldiers to torture Iraqi prisoners. "Back when the
Army had [General Manuel] surrounded [in Panama], they used
our music to drive him fucking nuts," Johnson recalled gleefully.
"More recently, they used it to disorient a group of insurgents
in Baghdad, like some crazy weapon of deaf and destruction."
Bizarre news item #2: Hatebeak have produced the ultimate in
death metal brutality, with vocals so throat-shedding they simply
can't be human. That's because they're not: Hatebeak is the
first death metal band whose lead singer is a parrot. Yes, you
read that right: a parrot. A Congo African Grey named Waldo,
to be precise. Just how Waldo's paint-peeling vocals are integrated
into Hatebeak's ferocious assault is a "trade secret" according
to guitarist Blake, but it can be reasonably surmised that they
set up a mic in the bird room and hoped for the best. Hatebeak
have already released a split with the human-only band Longmont
Potion Castle, featuring three parrot-fronted songs with titles
like Beak of Putrefaction (a play on the Carcass classic
Reek of Putrefaction) and God of Empty Nest (a
nod to Morbid Angel's God of Emptiness). Hatebeak have
received such a strong response that the second pressing of
their CD is nearly sold out, with a third currently in the works.
They will also soon release a split with Caninus that includes
tracks like Bird Seeds Of Vengeance (a reference to Nile's
Black Seeds of Vengeance). Caninus, unsurprisingly, is
a group fronted by two pit bull terriers. For more information,

Michelle Phillipov
After helming the metal section since its inception two years back - and doing a brilliant job of it, might we add - Michelle Phillipov is passing the baton to the more-than-capable hands of James Brazel: hence, please send your metal news and gig information to occulto@iprimus.com.au.
