Dappled Cities Fly
+ Disaster Plan, Because Of Ghosts, Aviator Lane
Jade Monkey, Sat 4 Dec
Aviator Lane were the first band to grace the stage of the Jade Monkey, playing a short but sweet set of moody, mostly low-volume indie goodness. The mood they were aiming for was not matched by the talkative crowd (I apologise for my part in that), but they seemed like the kind of band I want to hear more from. So I urge them to play more shows: Adelaide needs great bands, and I feel Aviator Lane are destined for greatness.
Because Of Ghosts was the band I knew least about, which is weird, really, since they've been getting the most hype. After the show, the people I talked to seemed to form two distinct groups: those who felt that their instrumental experimentalism was a sincerely profound musical statement, and those who felt that their long-winded convolutions were simply tedious and that they spent too much time hiding behind a riff, or a xylophone sample, without really creating the kind of mood and emotion to keep our attention. I belong to the latter group; but then, maybe we just don't get it. Still, I get the distinct feeling all this hype may not be doing them any favours.
Whilst I may never see Belgian band dEUS play songs from their brilliant 'In A Bar, Under The Sea' album in Australia, I can see Disaster Plan, whose own music deserves favourable comparison. They are fantastic - musically adventurous yet familiar, humorous yet sincere, and above all truly captivating. There seems to be no hype around Disaster Plan, which is both wrong and unfair, for they are one of the best live bands in the country.
Finally there was Dappled Cities Fly, who like many young-ish bands
have adopted the nasty habit of not playing previous singles. Disaster
Plan's Richard Moffatt spent the whole night yelling for B-Engine,
which they finally played as an encore, and I wish I'd done the same
for Chameleon Girl, a song distinctly lacking from their set.
Still, their newer singles such as the brilliant Cream went
down a treat, and their album seems to be superb. Again, there is
very little hype about them, so let me create some. They're really
bloody good, and next time they're in Adelaide you have to see them
play. That goes for Disaster Plan too.
Now we just have to wait until next time to see the crowds rushing through the doors.
