Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Playstation 2
Insomniac/SCEA

Insomniac have resurrected space mechanic Ratchet and his loveable robot buddy Clank for the third installment of the series. Feted as a hero after the events of the first two games, Clank (as adorable as ever) has become the star of hot television series 'Secret Agent Clank,' while poor Ratchet has been relegated to the on-screen role of his bumbling comic-relief chauffeur. When the galaxy is threatened by the nefarious Dr Nefarious (Did George Lucas name the characters?) and his evil scheme to turn all organic life forms into robots, they leap at the chance to snap back into action.
The new game features the introduction of a love interest for Ratchet (Sasha, the daughter of the Clinton-esque Galactic President) and the return of old favourites Helga, Al and - of course - Captain Quark (think Futurama's Zap Brannigan with an antenna and a chin of which Bruce Campbell would be envious).
The impressive arsenal of weapons and gadgetry is back, with a few additions, as is the impressively large 3D environments. The basic gameplay structure is the same, but this time round you'll be called upon to help out the Galactic Rangers in a series of short, varied trial-by-fire missions. Also featured are the Annihilation Nation arena matches and gauntlet runs, and - so intertextual! so meta! - Captain Quark "vid-comics" (old-school 2D mini-games).
Fun, funny and engrossing, 'Up Your Arsenal' is a worthy successor to Ratchet and Clank 1 & 2. The franchise has not been significantly expanded or developed by the addition, but why fix what ain't broke? If you liked the first two, you'll like this. If you haven't played the first two, now's a good time to start.
