Puff 'n' Stuff.

The local lineup for the Big Day Out has been announced, and it's a bit of a humdinger. Not only are the Hilltop Hoods among the touring party but Mere Theory, The Vandas and DJs Tyrone Jacobs, Lachlan Pender and Goodhed have also been announced. What's more, the Local Produce stage will showcase eleven of Adelaide's finest, and Puff gives up mad props for Wolf & Cub, DJ Banshee, I Killed The Prom Queen, Testeagles, Illicit Eve, Smack Granny, The Zero Kelvins, Pharaohs, The News, the Central Deli Band and The Hot Lies! Make us proud, kids.

They join the BDO lineup alongside the rest of the final artists: Frenzal Rhomb, Jebediah, The Mess Hall and DJ Jonathan Wall. Tickets are going at a hell of a lick so if you're planning to enjoy the likes of the Beastie Boys, Chemical Brothers, Powderfinger, Grinspoon, Slipknot and the like, you'd be well advised to grab your ticket now. After all, Sydney's already competely sold out...

That said, would it be churlish for Puff to point out that for the last few years Adelaide and Perth have enjoyed the same touring lineup as the eastern states, but this year it appears that we're the poor cousins again? After all, among the bands that are only doing the eastern Big Days Out are the enticing likes of Rise Against, Electrocute, The Hives, RJD2, Evermore, Kid Koala, Money Mark and The Polyphonic Spree, Puff's not angry, mind, just very disappointed.

Onto the CD launch roundup trail, pardners. Brillig and Leigh StarDust joined forces for a stirring rendition of Fashion at Fowlers Live's Bowie-A-Rama earlier this year, and so pleased were they that they've committed it to CD and will be launching it as a one-off single at the Jade Monkey on Fri 17 Dec, along with The Zero Kelvins.

Ex-Adelaideans High Stakes are also riding the aforementioned CD launching trail, which would explain their CD launch on Proclamation Day (you have to admire their paraochial love for obscure South Australian holidays), also known as Sun 26 Dec, at Jive with Muscle Car and The Dairy Brothers

And the CD launches just keep on coming! Solid MC releases his new one with a launch at the Rhino Room on Fri 7 Jan, Ethyls Wreck unleash their long-awaited debut at the Gov on Sat 8 Jan (with Foreshore and Liquid Blue), while Superlux set theirs free at Jive on Sat 8 Jan.

That's not even all: expect announcements soon for the launch of Leigh StarDust's new full-length CD, plus debuts for Cookie Baker and The Zero Kelvins.

Joy and sorrow: that's what Thurs 23 Dec will be all about at the Jade Monkey. It's your call as to which feeling you'd attribute to which event, but Puff recommends "joy" should accompany the news that Rash are reforming to celebrate their 10th Anniversary with a whole set of the old favourites. They've invited Career Girls to strap on the rock for one last time ever after semi-calling it a day in April - that'll be the "sorrow" part, then. So if you'd like to see Rash or the Career Girls play, this'll be your last chance. It's not tears, there's just something in Puff's eye...

Puff is still in shock at the horrifying news that guitarist Dimebag Darrell (aka Darrell Abbott) was shot dead during a gig with his band Damageplan. Nathan Gale killed Abbott and three punters at the Ohio gig before being shot dead by a police officer. No motive for the murder has been confirmed, although there is speculation that Gale was a deranged fan who blamed Abbott for splitting up his previous band Pantera (Abbott and drummer brother Vinnie both left Pantera to concetrate on Damageplan).

Stuff from Puff: They're a fragile lot, these rock stars. Really, you'd expect they'd be a little more robust, but in this issue Puff reveals that you could knock most of them over with a feather: Rock People Who Get Ill #1: ex-Midnight Oil frontman/current Labor MP for Kingsford-Smith Peter Garrett reportedly collapsed during a morning swim (how does one collapse while swimming, Puff asks?) and was rushed to hospital. He's apparently OK now, but they're still baffled as to what happened... Rock People Who Get Ill #2: Franz Ferdinand were forced to play acoustically as a trio when bassist Bob Hardy was hospitalised with severe gastroenteritis in Japan. The band subsequently continued the tour with bassist Dino Gollnick from support act The Beat Up, while Toshi Yano from The Firey Furnaces subbed for the first few US dates while Bob recuperated... Rock People Who Get Ill #3: Marianne Faithfull has cancelled the rest of her European tour after suffering a seizure in Milan. She's been advised to take three months off but insists that she'll reschedule the dates for early 2005: which also means, incidentally, that she won't be appearing in the upcoming Sydney production of 'The Black Rider,' the theatrical piece written by William S Burroughs and Tom Waits... Rock People Who Get Ill #4: James Brown is reportedly about to go under the knife in his battle with prostate cancer. The 71 year old is confident he'll beat the disease... Rock People Who Get Ill #5: Kings Of Leon's drummer Nathan Followill had a car on standby during the band's recent UK dates, ready to rush him to hospital if he became unable to play from a particularly nasty kidney infection. Apparently, however, he did OK... There's no word on any Adelaide visit as yet, but people of a certain age and very particular sense of humour are delighted to hear that The Goodies - yes, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Bill Oddie and Graeme Garden - will be premiering their new stage show in Sydney and Melbourne in March 2005.

Melbourne urban-country rock sorts Indio Mau are coming over with their 'Big Eyed Winner' CD (featuring a cover of Devo's Gut Feeling, no less) which they'll launch at the Grace Emily on Sat 18 Dc with Baby Doll and Blow Up Betty.

What with being lionised in the movie 'Garden State' and contributing songs to the new SpongeBob Squarepants movie it's a surprise that The Shins can make time to pop over for a show at Fowlers Live on Fri 11 Feb: but that's just what they're doing!

Don't forget that The Killers (whose 'Hot Fuss' is one of the most impressive debuts of 2004, in Puff's humble opintion) will be making their very first visit to Adelaide on Thurs 16 Dec for a show at Thebbie with Betchadupa - you won't want to miss that, surely?

The Nation Blue were just here a second ago, surely? In any case, they're making a more than welcome return with Blueline Medic for a show at the Enigma Bar with Realist Few.

Or perhaps you'd like something a litte more left-of-centre? Sydney experimental noise musician Lucas Abela will be taking on the nom-de-rock of Justice Yeldham & The Dynamic Ribbon Device for a set at the Jade Monkey on Thurs 16 Dec, along with Home For The Def, Nun and Sound Of Mercy Killing.

You'd think we'd be done with the whole "festival" thing by now, what with the Big Day Out, The Falls and Meredith, but then the East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival sends through their first announcement for the Easter long weekend and it already contains the likes of George Clinton (complete with 30 piece Parliament/Funkadelic band), Solomon Burke, Bebel Gilberto, John Lee Hooker Jr, Bo Diddley, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Eric Bibb, Kasey Chambers, Anne McCue, The Cat Empire, Janis Ian, The Frames, George Thorogood, The Whitlams, Luka Bloom and Desmond Dekker! Lawks a mercy! Hence, if you've not made plans for March 24-28 and fancy a trip to Byron Bay, there's plenty of reasons to start making plans.

Sydney two piece BugGirl have just released their 'Looming Shadows' CD (whose lead single is playfully entitled Suck It Fuck It Like A Bitch From Hell) and they're making their first foray to our charming burg for a show with Kamikaze at the Crown & Anchor on Thurs 16 Dec.

More stuff from Puff: That gentleman Usher behaved like a grown up at GQ's Man Of The Year awards, showing off his panache and good grace by banning any other guest (including the obviously-not-nearly-as-important likes of Dustin Hoffman) from the red carpet - they had to enter through the back door. What a charmer, says Puff... A couple of issues back Puff reported that guitarist Dante DeCaro had left Hot Hot Heat but fans of the Canadian new wavers can breathe easy: they've enlisted new boy Luke Pacquin and new single You Owe Me An I.O.U. will drop early next year, followed by the album 'Elevator'... It wouldn't be a Stuff From Puff without a reformation update: latest bunch to realise that they don't have much in the way of superannuation are Motley Crue, the original lineup of which has just announced a US tour... Covers That Clearly Herald The Coming Of The Apocalypse #1: Talented and brilliant renaissance woman Paris Hilton has been working on her debut album, which is set to include covers of Blondie's Heart Of Glass and David Bowie's Fame. Dear god... Covers That Clearly Herald The Coming Of The Apocalypse #2: Petra Haden, former singer/violinist of That Dog, has recorded a track-by-track a cappella cover album of 'The Who Sell Out'... Covers That Clearly Herald The Coming Of The Apocalypse #3: Not satisfied with their horrible cover of Cameo's Word Up, Korn are said to be contemplating releasing a covers EP where they reinterpret Nine Inch Nails' Head Like A Hole and the Psychedelic Furs' Love My Way... And finally, Xbox and PS2 owners who've ever wanted to thump Fred Durst, rejoice! Limp Bizkit's adorable frontman is an unlockable character in the forthcoming 'Fight Club' console game. No lawyers in sight.

New Zealand's Diediedie will be bringing to rock to Adelaide along with Melbourne noiseniks My Disco and Arrows: catch them at the Exeter on Rundle St on Fri 17 Dec.

Nice work, Nathan Leigh Jones. The SA artist took out both the Musicoz Artist Of The Year award and the Festival Music Publishing Category, scoring himself around $40,000 in recording time, CD pressing, a shiny new Maton guitar and a bunch of other music-career-related stuff. Congratulations!
