Eiderdown
Summer Of The Red Wolf
Independent
These days Zac Coligan is perhaps best known as the affable chap at the Jade Monkey, but those with longer memories might remember him as the singer/bassist with Bergerac, and before that as the floppy-fringed bassman with well-loved nearly-theres The Miltons. Those who feared that Coligan's move offstage signalled the end of his musical aspirations can now breathe easy thanks to Eiderdown, his home-recording project with partner Naomi Thompson.
Unsurprisingly 'The Summer Of The Red Wolf' sounds like a more subdued
Bergerac in places (one almost expects Jed Palmer's guitar to come
crashing in during the loping Shadow Of My Hand), but that's
not to say that Coligan is retreading old ground here. There's an
almost Auteurs-like edge to the opening So Sad, It Was Worth The
Wait (complete with a twangy ukekele line from Thompson that sounds
to these ears like the riff from Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy),
toy piano gives an eerie atmosphere to the already plenty atmospheric
When It Didn't Matter Anymore, and the closing The Eve Of
Acid Rain is a gentle ukelele strum with Coligan sounding like
he's beaming in his vocals from the safety of an orbiting satellite.
And, like most of Coligan's previous work, it's all rather jaw-droppingly
great.
This is music to settle down with and give yourself over to. Given their night jobs, one probably shouldn't expect Eiderdown to gig much - then again, they have one hell of an in with this great little venue on Twin St...
