Because Of Ghosts
The Because Of Ghosts Live 12" With An Etching On Side B
Art School Dropout/Independent
It's no secret the Because Of Ghosts brothers play in a similar style to that forged ten years ago by the patron saints of Australian instrumental music, The Dirty Three. At the same time the young Melbourne trio is entrenched in the underground tradition of hand-made records and lo-fi production values.
Its latest is a hard cardboard hand-sewn one-sided 12" backed with
an Anime-style angel carving. The four pieces on side A of the 12"
are live versions of older songs recorded in July of this year at
the Hopetoun Hotel in Sydney. Prun Sunk, perhaps the archetypal
Because Of Ghosts song opens the record with its tangled multi-layered
guitar lines and propulsive 5/4 drumming.
The closing Hello Darkness is bookended by glockenspiel and
breathing and filled with fluttering drums and half-speed Spanish
melody.
With only 200 copies of the 12" printed, by the time you've read this, the record might be forever gone. For dynamic rock music with soul, it's best to catch Because Of Ghosts live.
