Puff 'n' Stuff.
Thinking of enjoying some festival action? The Meredith Music
Festival is getting crazily close to sold out: Friday night's
already gone, so if you plan to get along on the Saturday and
Sunday - and you'd be mad not to, since you'd be able to see
The Dirty Three, Jolie Holland, M Ward, DJ Dexter, Young Heart
Attack and so many, many more - then you'd better get a ticket
right about now. Which you can do from dB Magazine, as it happens.
Speaking of festivals and the selling out
of those festivals, if you were planning on spending New Years
at Lorne enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the Falls
Festival, you'd better either have a ticket or enjoy changing
your plans: all tickets for the Victorian Falls Festival have
sold out, and by the time you read this you might have missed
the metaphorical boat for the Tasmanian Falls Festival as well,
which sould be a shame since they've recently added Vercua Salt,
Japan's Dakota Star and comedians Greg Fleet and Adelaide's
Lehmo to the already-impressive bill (which already includes
The Black Keys, De La Soul, Billy Bragg, The Living End, The
John Butler Trio, Missy Higgins, The Thrills, Spiderbait, The
Cat Empire, Donavon Frankenreiter, You Am I, The Beautiful Girls,
Hilltop Hoods, Rocket Science, TZU, Hayden, Sarah Blasko, Even,
The Cops and tonnes more.
And while we're on the subject of The Falls, six of Adelaide's finest will be battling it out for a slot on the Lorne stage in a deadly game of cat and mouse that will leave you breathless... or, to put it another way, they're playing at Jive on Wed 1 Dec and the one that the judge like best gets the slot. Competitors are Bombscare, Krysalis, Brillig, The New Pollutants, Special Patrol and The Dairy Brothers, which makes it a pretty sweet lineup in any case: get along and support your fave.
Festivals/selling out part 3: The final announcement
hasn't even been made yet and the Sydney Big Day Out has already
sold out, with Melbourne and Gold Coast also going strong -
and, Puff's reliably informed, Adelaide sales are up 20% on
last year. Puff doesn't want to cause a panic here but we could
be heading for an early sellout, so you might want to grab your
tickets sooner rather than later if you want to enjoy the sweet,
sweet sounds of Beastie Boys, Powderfinger, Chemical Brothers,
Grinspoon, The Donnas, System Of A Down, The Music, Blues Explosion,
Hatebreed, Le Tigre and the like - and keep an eye out for the
final lineup announcement, which will include the local contingent
who'll be reprazentin for Adelaide.
CD launches ahoy! The Ben Farrell Band enjoyed their CD launch at Raglans a little while back so much that they've decided to do it all again down south: they're playing at the Morphett Vale Footy Club on Sat 11 Dec.
Jazz singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist
Elizabeth Carthew is also on the CD launching trail: her full
length debut 'The Dream' is released to the world via a performance
at the No Liezz Jazz Club at North Tce's Club 199 on Fri 10
Dec, along with her combo of pianist Bill Risby, bassist Gary
Holgate and drummer Simon Barker (drums).
Impartial, or Several Of The Artists Formerly Known As Nun Nicer, are launching their debut CD 'Impatient For Change' at Fowlers Live on Fri 10 Dec with an all-ages, all-star lineup of Snap To Zero, Double Dragon, Enemy Of? and The Jonestown Syndicate. Doors open early, so plan accordingly.
The Ramonettes are still coming down from
their very successful European tour, but they're not about to
slow down. In fact, they've been asked to co-headline the '5th
Annual Ramone-a-thon Live!' at Brisbane's Chelsea Hotel, alongside
The Spazzys and Mach Pelican. Gabba gabba hey, indeed.
Former Adelaide lads High Stakes are also popping back home for Xmas, which might explain why their CD launch is on Boxing Day... in any case, they'll be rocking Jive on Sun 26 Dec with Muscle Car and The Dairy Brothers.
It's not exactly a CD launch, but local performer
Damien Fernandez will be doing not one, not two but three sets
at Jive on Fri 3 Dec, showing off everything from his smooth
folk-funk stylings to his Prince-style funk and MCing skillz.
It's been a long while since Area 7 graced us with their presence, but they're heading back for a show at Fowlers Live on Sat 11 Dec in support of their recent-ish single Big Issue.
New Buffalo must have liked her recent show:
she's heading straight back to Adelaide as the guest of Architecture
In Helsinki, who'll be bringing the twee to Jive on Fri 10 Dec.
Sob! Crossroads are ringing down the curtain with one final all-ages gig at the Reynella Enterprise and Youth Centre on Sat 18 Dec, with Terra Firma, Red Monika and DJ Dymes giving it a good send off.
Stuff from Puff: This issue's reformation
report begins with 60s supergroup Cream - yes, the one with
Eric Clapton in it. Clapton, drummer Ginger Baker and bassist
Jack Bruce are said to have agreed to a run of dates at the
Royal Albert Hall next year... Indie kids, prepare your cries
of "sell out!": after becoming the band of choice on 'The OC,'
Death Cab For Cutie have just inked a deal with Atlantic, meaning
they'll be on Warners over here. Puff liked their old stuff
better etc etc... Ever wondered what David Lee Roth is up to?
According to Popbitch, the former Van Halen frontman is in New
York training to be a paramedic and recently saved a Bronx heart
attack victim's life... Liam Gallagher - you remember him, that
guy from Oasis - has been fined a hearty £35,000 in damages
after admitting to being involved in a brawl at a German nightclub
in 2002 which ended in Gallagher losing two teeth and the German
leg of the tour being cancelled. Former drummer Alan White was
also charged... RIP Terry Melcher, producer of The Byrds and
The Beach Boys (and, errr, co-writer of Kokomo) - the
legendary studio boffin died after a long battle with skin cancer
at the age of 62... Former Marily Manson bassist Jeordie White
(aka Twiggy Ramirez) has been working on the new Nine Inch Nails
album, although there's no official word on whether he's a member
of the band... Ozzy Osbourne has announced there will be more
no episodes of 'The Osbournes,' citing the pressure that constant
filming has put on himself, wife Sharon and their children Kelly
and Jack (who both subsequently went into much-publicised rehab)...
And despite Craig Nicholls' recent diagnosis of suffering from
Asbergers Syndrome (a mild form of autism), The Vines are insistent
that they're not splitting up, although manager Andy Kelly told
nme.com that the band would definitely never tour again in any
sort of long-term way, although the occasional live show was
still a possibility. Those who've seen The Vines live are unlikely
to complain...
Necromancy are gearing up for another Goth-fest on Sat 4 Dec when they hold 'A Nightmare Before Xmas: Industrial Strength' at the Enigma Bar. DJs Empusa and Azureus will be joined by Melbourne's DJ Bio-Def, plus there'll be giveaways, big-screen horror and more. They're also combing their Edgar Allen Poe at the moment for their New Years Evil masquerade ball, said to be based on Poe's 'The Masque Of The Red Death.'
Got your tickets for A Day On The Green as
yet? Again, you might want to do so shortly: after all, Elvis
Costello & The Imposters will be pulling out two hours of hits'n'memories,
with a solid day's worth of entertainment beforehand thanks
to The Vandas, Mick Thomas, Stephen Cummings, Diesel and more.
And it's all in the civilised surrounds of the Peter Lehmann
Winery in the Barossa Valley.
Former Fairport Convention violinist and UK folk legend Dave Swarbrick is currently recuperating after a double lung transplant to undertaken to combat his chronic emphysema, and a coterie of concerned colleagues and fans have embarked on a series of fundraising concerts - entitled, naturally enough, 'SwarbAid' - to help offset his medical costs and help support him while he's out of action. All bar one of the shows are in the UK... and that show happens to be at the Wheatsheaf Hotel on Fri 3 Dec, with Spiral Dance, Steve Foster, Smiffy's Glass Eye, Tim Whelan and more donating their talents to the cause.
More bands give Adelaide a wide berth on
what they cruelly call a national tour: The Dresden Dolls ignore
us in December, Tortoise avoid us in January, then The Delgados
thumb their noses at us in Feburary...
However, it seems churlish to complain when we're getting, say, Mudhoney. Yes, you read that right: those legendary Seattle rock folk will be at the Enigma Bar on Wed 2 March next year!
Sonic experimentalists Castings are heading
over from their homes in Sydney and Newcastle to make Adelaide
punters aware of their new CD-EP 'Uh Lotta Ukelele,' and to
that end they're playing at the SEAS Gallery on Hindley St on
Fri 3 Dec (along with the likes of Ned Collette, Headdress Of
Neon Flames, Artax Mission, Lola, r.domain and more) and the
Exeter on Rundle St on Sat 4 Dec (with Headdress Of Neon Flames,
again).
Colin Hay - yes, that bloke from Men At Work - is back in the country and therefore clearly figures that he might as well do a lap of it while he's here. Hence, he'll be at the Eagle On The Hill on Thurs 2 Dec and Fri 3 Dec. Reckon he'll do Down Under? Who can guess...
Women In Docs are also making a flying visit
to Adelaide for a show at the Jade Monkey on Thurs 9 Dec with
Junior.
There'll be New Zealand art terrorism a-go-go when The Night Creeps meet up with interstate villains Colditz Glider for the next Daggerz Sound System show at the Crown & Anchor on Thurs 2 Dec.
Puff's also delighted to note that The Shins
are returning to Adelaide for a show almost exactly a year since
their last one: they'll be at Fowlers Live on Fri 11 Feb.
So many things going on - gigs, Ladyfest, other things - so surely you know what you have to do? No? Here's a clue:
