Ignite

A strong work ethic is essential for a band seeking any degree of success, particularly when the band chooses to work outside the mainstream. Californian hardcore outfit Ignite are an embodiment of the get-stuck-in approach required to maintain a band's profile.

Though it's been a while since Ignite's 'A Place Called Home' album hit the shelves, the band haven't been sitting back and taking it easy, as bassist Brett Rasmussen explains.

"We put A Place Called Home out in 2000 in the US, then it came out nine months later in Europe. We basically toured through 2002 on the back of that CD," Rasmussen says, just days before setting off for the band's first Australian tour. "At that point we had done nothing but Ignite for nine straight years. For the recording of 'A Place Called Hom'e we worked on the songs for about a year from June 1998 to June 1999 then we did the Warped tour in Europe and played two of those new songs each night of the tour to work out the wrinkles of the songs. When we got home from Europe we went straight into the studio for a month with Thom Wilson and tracked everything. Then we flew up to San Francisco and mixed with Ryan Greene. We finished 2003 up in Europe on tour and slowly started working on new songs and touring during 2004."

Always on the lookout for new terrain to conquer, Ignite drew upon their solid network of friends and touring partners to put some southern hemisphere shows in place.

"We really wanted to open the Australian and South American markets for Ignite before we settled down and started solely working on the new CD. We wanted to get to those two new territories so we could officially release our next CD there and not have it just be an import," Rasmussen explains.

"We played with 28 Days in the UK in 2001 and we talked to them about coming down to support them on a tour but that never materialised. So we talked to the guys from Throwdown [Californian hardcore outfit who toured Australia in 2002] and they hooked us up with Graham [from Sydney's Resist Records]. We have heard great things about Australia from our friends in Pennywise, Millencolin, Amen and Throwdown."

And while Ignite are looking forward to their first Australian tour with the holiday spirit that pervades any foray into new territory, the band's work ethic is never far away.

"Once we get a new label we are going to be working like dogs in the rehearsal and recording studios. Right now we have seven or eight mostly finished songs and five or six in the works. We want to have the new CD out by [northern] summer. We are pretty excited about it!"

'A Place Called Home' is available on TVT/Shock and Ignite play at the Enigma Bar on Fri 19 Nov.
