Puff 'n' Stuff.
Hey you! Yes, you - have you logged on to dbmagazine.com.au
and cast your vote in the second annual dB Readers Awards (or,
as we acronymically call them, the dBras)? Then you'd better
do so, for that is how we best honour our talented local types
- and it's particularly urgent since voting closes on Mon 22
Nov! Why that's... very, very soon!
The second announcement for the Big Day Out
is in, and Puff's delight at the fact that we're getting Slipknot,
Le Tigre, The Blues Explosion (yes, Jon Spencer's mob), Kid
606, Hatebreed, Carl Cox, Regurgitator, Spiderbait, Decoder
Ring, Bexta, Atmosphere, Scribe & P-Money, our own Hilltop Hoods,
Deceptikonz, Wolfmother and The D4 at the Showgrounds on Fri
4 Feb is slightly tempered by the news that we're missing out
on The Hives and The Polyphonic Spree, who are only doing the
east coast. Dammit. Puff's assured that it's because of northern
hemisphere tour commitments rather than a personal affront,
but Puff's not so sure... we'll just have to see what the final
announcement holds in just under a month.
"But Puff," you might be saying, "what of the local talented types who are perhaps releasing a new recording, and perhaps even launching said release with some sort of specially-themed gig?" Well, get off Puff's case. Jeez, for once in your life take some responsibility for yourself - you're not the boss of Puff... Oh, alright then. Tokyo Story have just released their 'Somehow Start Running' CD-EP, and they'll be launching it at Jive on Sat 11 Dec with Paper Tiger and Illicit Eve.
Brillig have already launched their new acoustic
CD-EP 'Finders Keepers Losers Weepers' - and it went very well,
since you ask - but now they're launching the accompanying filmclip
(made on Super 8 and boasting "a creepy fairground feel") at
the Grace Emily on Sat 21 Nov, along with Leigh StarDust.
Also on the launch pad are Muscle Car (Crown & Anchor on Fri 3 Dec with NFI), Deluge (launching 'The Wrong Side Of Capitalism' at the Enigma Bar on Fri 10 Dec with Blood Mason, Imminent Psychosis and Meat Wallet) and ex-Adelaideans-now-New South Welshmen High Stakes (Jive on Sun 26 Dec, with Muscle Car and The Dairy Brothers). Satisfied now? Huh?
Rock & Bowl patrons, take note: if you were
planning to get along to the Woodville Bowl on Sat 20 Nov to
enjoy some ten pin action whilst enjoying music from The Cops,
Wolf & Cub and Gut, you should alter your trajectory south-east:
because of the Woodville Bowl's unfortunate fire, the event
has been relocated to Cross Road Bowl in Westbourne Park (intersection
of Goodwood Road). Everything else remains the same, note.
Not only are The Cops rockin' the Rock & Bowl, they're also doing an in-store at Big Star on Rundle St on Sat 20 Nov at 4pm. It's entirely free - but bowling will be kept to a minimum.
The good folks behind the new 'Peace Not
War Volume 2' CD are launching it with an early-week show at
Tonic Nightclub on Mon 29 Nov, featuring Saritah (Perth songstress
who appears on the CD - and is doing her own show at the Grace
Emily on Tues 30 Nov, incidentally), The New Pollutants, Train
Of Thought and Soursob Bob, plus DJs Rory and Japeye. Puff is
assured that all the money raised goes to the global peace movement.
The next Stage Against The Machine open mic night is set to ring through the Crossroads at Reynella Enterprise & Youth Centre on Fri 19 Nov, so if you're a singer, songwriter or musician who fancies getting up and having a go, doors open at 7.30pm. It's unlicensed and all-ages, to boot.
Grinspoon make a welcome return to SA for
a run of suburban and regional dates: they hit Le Rox (Bridgeway
Hotel) on Thurs 18 Nov (with The Hot Lies and Bad Girls Of The
Bible), the Westlands in Whyalla on Fri 19 Nov (with The Hot
Lies), the Pretoria Hotel at Mannum on Sat 20 Nov (with Bad
Girls Of The Bible - see a pattern forming here?) and finally
Shadows in Mt Gambier with both the aforementioned support bands
on board again. Got all that?
Ladyfest is set to make its first visit to Adelaide in the first weekend of December and promises "oestrogen laden evenings full of films, exhibitions and gigs". Not only are we getting gigs from the likes of MC Trey, Origami and Gorgeous but there's a slew of workshops at Adelaide Uni on Sat 4 Dec, including presentations from Lindy Morrison (ex-Go Betweens/Cleopatra Wong), a hip-hop workshop for the ladieez from the aforementioned MC Trey and a political forum with 'Party Girls' Kate Ellis (Labor MP), Michelle Lensink (Liberal MLC) and Greens Senator Kerry Nettle. And there's knitting too! Give the organisers a call on 8227 0155, or log on to www.ladyfestadelaide.com.au for more information.
Carclew's Off The Couch festival hits the
west end on Fri 26 Nov with 12 bands, no waiting lineup playing
at Jive, Caos Cafˇ and the Enigma Bar: The News, The Dairy Brothers,
Concrete Child, The Adult Bookstore, Krysalis, The Desert Boys,
Ergot, Sledgehammock, the Central Deli Band, Business As Usual,
Solid MC and Style High Club showing off their respective wares.
It's all ages and - best of all - completely free!
Fri 26 Nov is also the launch of the 'Show Us Your Riffs' compilation at Fowlers Live with Shrunken Headz, Illicit Eve, Sumi, Kaliedoscope, Heather Frahn, Amy Richardson, Ria, Legless, Kim Roberts, Hunting Season and King Daddy making with the rock.
Punkers Rufio will be set to tear up the
Adelaide UniBar on the very day this issue hits the streets
- Wed 17 Nov - with Mere Theory and The Rip.
The Fuse Festival officially starts on Thurs 25 Nov with an opening night gig at Jive featuring The Trafalgars, Special Patrol and Foreshore. There are events happening all over the west end over the subsequent three days (log on to fusefestival.com for all the details), but most notably the west end will come alive with the sounds of free, free rock on Sat 27 Nov with seven - count 'em - venues (Caos Cafˇ, Enigma, Isobar, Colonel Light Hotel, Jive, The Rockford and Traffic) playing host to an Australia wide lineup of (deep breath) Big Jim, Bindi Blacher, Distorted Minds, Em Dee, Fall Of Reason, Griffin, Jesse Younan, K-Oscillate, Liability Of My Own, Mr Wednesday, Nataleigh, Pfea, Red Jezebel, Tecoma, The Audreys, The Fuzz, The Hicksatomics, The Phobias, Vegas Kings, Waiter, Wesley Davidson, Wolf & Cub, Words Unrelated and Yunyu. Phew!
You read all about them in last issue, now
make sure you get to the show: Faun Fables play at the Jade
Monkey with Headdress of Neon Flames and DJ Manimal on Thurs
18 Nov
Stuff from Puff: Puff's feeling ornery, so it's time to burst
some BDO rumour bubbles: first up, the Pixies are a definite
non-starter (all plans post-Xmas have been scrapped, although
there are tentative plans for the band to record), Interpol
are almost certainly declining in favour of US tours, and it
looks like the strong rumour that Air would grace us with their
presence will remain only that... Carl Barat has announced that
The Libertines will take a break from gigs "for the forseeable
future" after December to nme.com, citing his need for an undisclosed
operation (which will "put [him] out of action for maybe some
months") as well as his hope that errant bandmate Pete Doherty
will kick his smack habit and rejoin the band ... Doherty, meanwhile,
has been banned from the Groucho Club after detroying a piece
of art valued at over £100,000 during a gig with his band Babyshambles...
REM let their anger at the return of George W Bush to office
show in New York at their first post-election gig, opening with
It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
and dusting off rarely-played and politically charged songs
like Welcome To The Occupation, Cuyahoga and Begin
The Begin... Marc Almond is making a "remarkable" recovery
after his horrific motorcycle crash a few weeks back. Apparently
he's moved to a private hospital and is well on the mend...
Paul Weller's also under the weather - he's been forced to cancel
his entire UK and Ireland tour after being hospitalised by serious
tonsillitis and a throat abcess... The memorial service of legendary
UK broadcaster John Peel on Fri 12 Nov was attended by a number
of musicians paying their respects among the hundreds of fans
who flocked to the town of Bury St Edmonds, including The White
Stripes, Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackay (Pulp), Karl Hyde (Underworld),
Robert Plant, Stuart Murdoch (Belle And Sebastian), Tjinder
Singh and Ben Ayres (Cornershop), comedian Griff Rhys Jones
and Fergeal Sharkey of The Undertones, whose Teenage Kicks -
famously Peel's favourite song of all time - closed the ceremony...
Blink 182's drummer Travis Barker married former Miss USA Shanna
Moakler on Sat 30 Oct in a ceremony inspired by 'The Nightmare
Before Christmas'. This is Halloween, indeed... Reunion corner:
after years of namechecks from devotees like Interpol and Franz
Ferdinand, the original lineup of Gang Of Four - who haven't
shared a stage since 1981 - are reuniting for some UK shows
in January... And speaking of band breaking up and things, Thursday
have announced that, despite strong rumours they were to split
(and lead singer Geoff Rickley saying as much in an interview),
the band have had some time off and are definitely staying together
- in fact, they're half thinking of releasing two albums in
2005.
DJ Ian Bell and the evil geniuses behing
Fowlers Live's regular Saturday night club Bang! are having
a special event on Sat 20 Nov: Fowlers is hosting Feast's Taboo
Dance Party (with DJs Matt Steer, Neroli, Josh, Pete Forrester
and more), so Bang! is moving to the Spanish Pavillion of the
Wayville Showgrounds for the Bang! Senior Prom Night: it kicks
off at 8pm, runs until the wee small hours and you're encouraged
to dust off your most horrid tux/frock for the event.
The good folks at bandhost.com.au are offering a special package to musical dB Magazine readers who might like to get a web presence for their outfit: free dot com names for a year's signup, and they'll double your webspace allocation for their standard package rate, just for casually mentioning that you saw the offer here. Drop them a line at offers@bandhost.com.au and they'll see you right.
That indie-rock goddess that most people
know as PJ Harvey (and that dB's music editor alludes to with
a sigh and a dreamy smile) will be tearing through her extensive
back catalogue at Thebarton Theatre on Sat 27 Nov.
Excitement is a-brewing for The Killers' first ever Adelaide show - they'll be whipping out all the 'Hot Fuss' faves at Thebarton Theatre on Thurs 16 Dec with Betchadupa.
Yes, the rumours are true: Green Day are
coming to Australia in support of their mightily popular (and
critically lauded) album 'American Idiot' - they'll be at the
EntCent on Sat 12 March next year, and they'll have Simple Plan
with them.
Pretty Girls Make Graves keep getting namechecked by cool people overseas as being one of those bands you should really be into - and conveniently enough, they're playing just down the road from dB Magazine at the SEAS Gallery on Hindley St, along with fellow US alterna-noise folk Les Savy Fav and locals Hit The Jackpot and My Sister The Cop.
Zinc were interviewed in last issue, so this
is just a polite reminder that they're playing the very day
this issue comes out (Wed 17 Nov) at the Grace Emily, then they're
at the Eagle On The Hill on Thurs 18 Nov. Now you know.
Thirsty Merc are doing the rounds of late - not only are they supporting stadium sorts Maroon 5 at the EntCent on Thurs 25 Nov, they're popping in early for their own show at the Enigma Bar on Thurs 18 Nov.
Mr Tim Rogers and Mr Nick Barker are teaming
up for an intimate acoustic show at the Grace Emily on Wed 24
Nov.
Machine Gun Fellatio bring their brand new 'On Ice' album to the live arena with not one, not one-and-a-half but two shows at the Gov on Sat 27 Nov and Sun 28 Nov, with guests The Spazzys and Butterfingers on both nights.
Phew! So much afoot - you know what to do...
Get Out Of The House!
