Puff 'n' Stuff.
CD launches ahoy! Pete Wilson, that chap who fronted Cheeseworld, is making his solo debut with 'New Years Resolution' and a launch at the Prince Albert on Sat 6 Nov, along with the ever-charming Soursob Bob.
Also in a CD launching sort of mood are The
Gels (Jive, Fri 19 Nov with Babydoll, Muscle Car and Sin City),
Muscle Car (Fri 3 Dec at the Crown & Anchor, with NFI) and Deluge
(Fri 10 Dec at Enigma with Blood Mason, Imminent Psychosis and
Meat Wallet). And there's still more to come!
It's been eight long years since Adelaide metallers Deadlock have graced a stage, but they've roused the beast for a show at the Enigma Bar on Fri 12 Nov, along with Double Dragon and guests.
Congratulations are due to Sweet Baby James
& Rob Eyers, who have just been signed to Black Market Music
(home of Bob Brozman and Phil Manning). They'll start work on
their first full-length album for the label early next year,
and they'll be getting their chops up by playing every Thursday
in November at the Fad Bar & Gallery.
You may have heard of this little event that we in The Biz like to call the Big Day Out. Oh, you have? Nifty. Anyway, the 2005 event will have a dedicated Adelaide presence thanks to the Local Produce stage, funded by the good people of Arts SA. So if you reckon you have what it takes to rock the BDO (that's a solid 30 minute set, you know) then you should get your bio and demo to Local Produce, PO Box 439 Goodwood, 5034. And get a move on - it's got to be in their hands no later than Fri 19 Nov, with the successful artists being informed by Fri 26 Nov. For all the details, check out the ad that's in this very issue!
Fruit are back gigging in Adelaide - well,
at least three of them are. The band have spent the most of
the year in the US working with producer David Ivory on the
forthcoming 'Burn' album, but while bassist David Ruiz takes
some time off to spend time with his newborn son, the frontline
of Mel Watson, Susie Keynes and Sam Lohs are hitting the road
and will appear at Jive for Feast on Sat 13 Nov.
Last issue Puff made the claim that Handsome Dick Manitoba - frontman of The Dictators, who has served a cease-and-desist on Dan Snaith, until recently known as Manitoba but now as Caribou - has never made a record under the Manitoba name. "Not so," says local rock know-it-all Karl Melvin pointed out: it seems Handsome Dick released 'Manitoba's Wild Kingdom', which Melvin describes as being "one of the greatest cock-rock albums without actually being cock-rock." Mr Melvin, consider our caps doffed.
Yeah, thanks The Faint - come to Australia
in January and don't come to Adelaide, you bastards. What's
more depressing is that mad Berlin femmes Cobra Killer are also
giving us a wide berth. Dammit.
Rock, The Kids: 28 Days return to Adelaide in support of their 'Extremist Makeover' CD with an all-ages show at Heaven along with The Hot Lies, Sumi on Fri 12 Nov.
The day this issue hits the streets - or,
as calendar purists would have it, Wed 3 Nov - is also the day
that punkers Pulley make with the rock at the Adelaide UniBar,
along with Last Year's Hero (who are about to head off to Japan,
Puff's told).
Most Precious Blood are also playing on Wed 3 Nov: they'll be tearing the Enigma Bar a new one, along with the similarly-powerful Through Closed Eyes, Shotpointblank and Cry Murder.
Stuff from Puff: Hot Hot Heat's guitarist
Dante Decaro has left the band, who have just finished recording
their second album... Marc Almond was in a critical state after
being thrown from the back of a motorcycle, which collided with
a car in London. He has since been moved out of intensive care,
although there's no word on how extensive his injuries are...
Suede founders Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler (who quit the
band acrimoniously in 1994) are set to release their debut album
as The Tears in early 2005... Salt'n'Pepa are currently working
on a sitcom based on their lives. It's the second time they've
tried it - there was a 1994 attempt that failed to get picked
up. Puff hopes for a similar result this time around... A whole
bunch of today's popular music types have signed on for a remake
of Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas? - it looks like members
of Travis, Coldplay, The Darkness, Oasis, Blur and U2 are already
on board, with Dido and Robbie Williams expected to sign on
shortly. The funds raised will be going to famine victims in
the Sudan and co-writers/Band Aid founders Bob Geldof and Midge
Ure are still at the helm. Puff would like to point out that,
noble though the cause is, it's still a dreadful song... Fatboy
Slim, aka Norman Cook, has reacted angrily to British PM Tony
Blair using one of his tracks in his campaign for election.
In the Sunday Times, Cook insisted that he was "upset and, unusually
for me, almost angry" about Right Here, Right Now being
used at the Labour Party's conference in October. "The use of
the song implies that I support Blair. Nothing could be further
from the truth. The political voices I support are Tony Benn,
Glenda Jackson and Ken Livingstone. People who are clearly left
wing. I have a very specific opposition to the war in Iraq.
It is an unnecessary conflict and Blair is primarily responsible
for getting us into it."
A bunch of Adelaide's finest are joining forces to pay
tribute to a man who helped shape their muse: Peter Combe. Yes,
Adelaide's own children's entertainer extraordinaire, the man
behind such classics as Spaghetti Bolognaise, Toffee Apple and
Newspaper Mama will be getting his due as the likes of Blood
Robots, Leigh StarDust, The Big Band, The Dairy Bros, Cookie
Baker, Star 10 Hash and more perform at 'Combe-By-Ya' at the
Jade Monkey on Sun 7 Nov. And who knows? The man himself might
even make an appearance...
There's a new venue in town, kids: the Old
Queens Arms have decided that they're getting bands back (to
which Puff, whose memory is long and can remember many a gig
there in the 1980s and early 90s, says "huzzah!") and have enlisted
Trentwood (who are launching their 'Autotunes' CD), Hairy Lemon
and Velveteen Habit to christen the live room with a dose of
rock.
This month's Daggerz Sound System at the Crown & Anchor features Melbourne visitors The Sinking Citizenship, who are hawking their brand new 'Broadcasting Germs' CD-EP, along with Vars and the Daggerz DJs.
With new single Mr Brightside already
a favourite on the airwaves, tickets to The Killers' show at
Thebarton Theatre are already moving, so if you fancy seeing
what the future of rock'n'roll is looking like, you'd better
get a move on.
Russian Teammate have a CD out. Hunting Season almost
have a CD out. The Zero Kelvins are midway through mixing their
CD. That's the sort of dedicated commitment to rock that you'll
experience when they play at the Jade Monkey on Fri 5 Nov.
Sydney pop-rockers Euphonic are coming back
over to Adelaide to make with the rock alongside Angelik at
the Crown & Anchor on Fri 12 Nov.
More stuff from Puff: An emo-punk Smashing Pumpkins tribute album is in the works: My Chemical Romance, A Static Lullaby and Poison The Well have already signed on to give their take on the Corgan classics... The dream is over for Kasey Chambers and partner Cori Hopper: the couple have announced their separation (despite appearing together at the ARIAs the other week) and "hope to remain good friends in the future." The couple have a child... Proving that there's always a more stupid idea just around the corner, Afroman is about to release his 'Jobe Bells' Xmas album, with oh-so-hilarious titles including Deck My Balls, Violent Night and O Chronic Tree. Sophisticated comedy, thy name is Afroman... Ween have cancelled their US tour: manager Greg Frey has issued a statement reading in part "There is a problem within the band that requires an immediate intervention for the health, welfare and safety of one of its members... if something is not done now... the consequences could be even more dire than the cancellation of these dates." There's no word on what the nature of the problem might be.
Bullet The Blue Sky have a brand new CD and
to celebrate they're coming to Adelaide for a show at the Crown
& Anchor on Sat 13 Nov, along with Hi End Audio and Realist
Few.
The lineup for the 2004 Fuse Festival has been announced, so Puff can happily reveal that the West End of Adelaide will be reverberating to the sounds of (deep breath) Big Jim, Bindi Blacher, Distorted Minds, Em Dee, Fall Of Reason, Griffin, Jesse Younan, K-Oscillate, Liability Of My Own, Mr Wednesday, Nataleigh, Pfea, Red Jezebel, Tecoma, The Audreys, The Fuzz, The Hicksatomics, The Phobias, Vegas Kings, Waiter, Wesley Davidson, Wolf & Cub, Words Unrelated, and Yunyu. It all happens on Sat 27 Nov, and it's all entirely free!
There'll be all-ages rock action happening
down south at the Brighton Footy Club when Sounds Like Chicken,
Seeds Of Babylon, The Jerks and Liability Of My Own bring the
noise on Fri 5 Nov.
After The Fall are back - again! - on their tour that never, ever ends: they're at the Adelaide UniBar on Fri 5 Nov, along with Mere Theory and Line Of Departure.
The Glory Boys are coming to town for the
first time ever for a couple of shows - catch them at the Grace
Emily on Sat 6 Nov (with The Streamliners) and then at Jive
on Sun 7 Nov in a show that also features a rare performance
by Vic Conrad & The First Third.
The Ramonettes have had an exciting final leg of their European tour: drummer Andrew Bunney has told Puff that their disappointment at having their Milan show (for the premiere of The Ramones documentary 'End Of A Century') cancelled was more than made up for when they popped over to Alcatraz in Spain, where Patti Smith was playing that night. As they contemplated buying tickets for the show, Bunney heard a plaintive cry from the stage door of the venue: "I can't get out. I'm locked in here!" It was La Smith herself, so Bunney fetched staff with the appropriate keys and Smith rewarded them with tickets to the show (and so The Ramonettes helped Patti Smith escape from Alcatraz...). Anyway, you can ask them all about it when they play their homecoming show at the Jade Monkey on Sun 14 Nov.
The Tea Party's long-awaited return to Adelaide
is just a few short weeks away, so if you're planning to get
along to see them at the Adelaide Uni Cloisters on Fri 26 Nov,
you'd better get hold of a ticket nice and sharpish.
Still contemplating heading east to spend New Years at the Falls Festival? It's a great idea - after all, there's everyone from Billy Bragg to De La Soul, the Hilltop Hoods to Sarah Blasko and all points in between, but you'd better get your tickets soonish: time's getting on, and there's only so many tickets in South Australia...
Mick Hart liked his Adelaide show a few weeks
back so much that he's doing it again - he'll be at Jive on
Sat 6 Nov, along with The Phobias.
'DNA' - which is, Puff's assured, the world's longest running fanzine - is celebrating 25 years of occasional publication with a gig at the Crown & Anchor on Sat 6 Nov. Fear & Loathing - the band whose fortunes (and, often, membership) has long been tied to 'DNA' take the headline spot, with support from the Backseat Romeos.
Evermore were here a few weeks back supporting
Little Birdy, but now they're headlining their own tour in support
of the brand new 'Dreams' - catch them at the Enigma Bar on
Sat 13 Nov, along with Bad Girls Of The Bible and The Phobias.
Gigs, Feast, festivals - there's so much going on, which is all the more reason to...
Get Out Of The House!
