Jet.

JetMark Wilson from Jet is back in his hometown of Melbourne for some much-needed down time after and extensive tour of the US. Wilson is doing his bit to get ready to embark on a national tour but in the meantime is enjoying living the simple life and getting back to basics.

"I'm house hunting" he explains. "I love this city and all my friends are here. I want to be around them. I'm looking for houses to buy that are in equal distance from my friends house so we can hang out as much as possible. You don't get to see them much when we're away," Wilson enthuses.

This down time is shared by all members of the band. "We're all over the place which is fine at the moment because we're not writing, we're just taking a break. We've been together for two years in a bus, we don't need to hang out all the time. We do keep in contact, we're all best friends."

It certainly has been a whirlwind of a ride for Jet after their meteoric rise to stardom with Are You Gonna Be My Girl. "We've kind of spanned the world now. We've done really well in America, Japan, Europe, England and Australia. Now in the Australian press we seem to be more like 'Local boys did good overseas' rather than 'Local boys went overseas and don't they know they should stay and work here all their lives,'" Wilson adds sarcastically, "but now that's changed. All the media we get now is positive."

Adding to their world wide success, the band recently picked up an award in the States and have just been nominated by the AMA for Favourite Artist in the Alternative Music Category. "We just won an MTV award which no one has ever done before from Australia. We were up against Evanessence, Hoobastank, Linkin Park, Yellow Card and The Darkness. We didn't expect it - we were happy just to be nominated. If you see the footage of us you can just tell we never expected to win. It's a pretty big deal over there but we didn't grow up with MTV. To an American band it would probably be a more coveted prize, but we understand the importance of it."

The overseas success has prepared Jet for touring back home, which seems a little like the band are doing things backwards. "I'm nervous. It really hit home that we're playing these massive venues in Australia. The last time we were here we did three Forum shows in Melbourne now were doing Festival Hall. The tour will be fun because we've got Dallas Crane and The Pictures with us."

Given the cancellation of Jet's last Adelaide due to Chris and Nick Cester's father John falling ill (he subsequently passed away, the band cancelling planned sets at UK festivals to return home), it was decided to put on something a little more extravagant. "For our Adelaide show we decided to put on our own festival because we did have to cancel the last one. We love going to Adelaide because people really come out in force. This will be our biggest gig ever anywhere in the world!" Wilson exclaims, brimming over with excitement.

A follow up album is on the cards but all good things come to those who wait. "We haven't started yet but we're talking and thinking about it. We need to have some time off before we head in to the next album. We still have to write a lot of it too," he explains. "All of us just want to take a break and hang out with our friends. We'll just chill out and write and have some fun. Chris lives in LA, Cam lives in London and me and Nick are here. It's time away from each other because you do live in each other's pockets and that's hard work for anyone. I challenge anyone to live in that kind of environment where you've got the pressures of everything else in being in this sort of business and the pressures of dealing with being successful all of a sudden and having people know who you are. It's not just the four of us its all the crew people too. It's 12 people living together in the tightest space there can be. It can really grate on you."

Jet play at Memorial Drive on Fri 22 Oct with Spiderbait, Dallas Crane and The Pictures. Limited tix available at dB Magazine.
