Puff 'n' Stuff.

So, nominated your favourite local artists, events and venues in the 2004 dB Magazine Readers Awards (known around these parts as "the dBras")? Well, given the number of nominations we've received, the answer is "quite probably" - but just in case, make sure you log on to dbmagazine.com.au and let us know your favourites before nominations close on Wed 13 Oct. Then the voting begins on Wed 20 Oct - but we'll tell you all about that next issue.

Don't forget that the very night that this issue hits the streets - Wed 6 Oct - is also the night that Iron & Wine will fill the Grace Emily with country/folk goodness. And you can get your tix at the newest CIB ticket outlet - dB Magazine!

It's always nice to hear from friends when they're overseas, and Puff received a nice postcard from locals The Ramonettes, who are currently on their European tour: "We packed our instruments and very few clothes and flew to Paris, collected our hire Volvo station wagon and drove through France, stopping in Champagne to drink real champagne," writes Suzy Ramone. "We stayed in a hotel without staff, just a credit card machine allocating rooms, then drove through Germany, stopping to try local beer and sausage. Now we are in Serbia. Today we will play our first gig after doing a TV interview. There are colour Ramonettes posters all over this town. We feel blessed." What, no "wish you were here?"

More local goings on: Nun Nicer are no more, but admirers of the band can breathe easy. They've expanded to a four piece with the addition of new bassist Matt Vans, changed their name to Impartial and are playing at Jive on Sat 9 Oct with The Jonestown Syndicate and Insect Seeking Technology.

Speaking of ch-ch-ch-changes, Line Of Departure (featuring ex-members of 99 Reasons Why and Force Fed 9) showcase their new wares at the Exeter on Fri 15 Oct, along with Sydney rockers Grand Fatal.

More local lineup alterations: The Dukes Of Haphazard bid frontman Rodney adieu with a show at the Underground on Fri 8 Oct, along with The Jerks, Left In The Changeroom and Before It All Ends.

Yeah, Puff knew all about this ages ago - but now we can reveal that The Tea Party will be coming to Adelaide, the town that loves them best, on Fri 26 Nov for a show at the Adelaide Uni Cloisters.

Lovers of gentle folk music and violent bloodsports are in for a treat at the Folk Centre on Sat 23 Oct when three duos duke it out for the coveted King Of The Duos crown - or, possibly, just all play a gig together. In the red corner: the John Baker Duo, with Fightin' Gail Buckby on the accordion of steel. In the blue corner: Raw Honey, starring Miranda "Crusher" Bradley and Sue "Knockout" Pratten. In the teal corner, The Yearlings, with Chris "Killer Robot" Parkinson tag-teaming Rowdy Robyn Chalken. Three duos go into the cage, one walks out. Puff's money is on JBD - just look at the power in those coiled muscles...

Lucie Garlik will launch her phonetically-titled CD 'Desyfer' on Thurs 28 Oct at Supermild, with support from The Futons and Mike Goodfellow.

On the subject of CD launches, Remedy are set to launch theirs at the Crown & Anchor on Sat 9 Oct, along with Everest.

Also launching it up big are Hi End Audio, who are holding up the SA end of the five-way split CD 'State Of Affairs' along with bands from Melbourne (Away From Now), Sydney (Perish The Thought), Brisbane (The Amity Affliction) and Perth (Miles Away). The launch hits the Enigma Bar on Fri 23 Oct, with the Audio boys joined by Away From Now, Mere Theory and The Realist Few.

Brisbane-based acoustic duo Stringmansassy are heading our way with their new album 'Dragonfly' and a show at Jive on Sun 17 Oct.

On the eve of the Von Bondies' Australian tour comes the surprise news that bassist Carrie Smith has handed in her notice. According to a statement at the band's website, "I have spent countless hours and many emotions thinking about this decision, but ultimately, it is the right decision for me... I wish the other VBs much success in the future and I know that they will continue to write and perform to the utmost of their abilities." This won't affect the tour, since the band have already named Yasmin Smith (who, Puff is led to believe, played in Detroit's The Starlight Desperation) as their new bassperson.

Stuff from Puff: More bands are burying the hatchet and reuniting: Jay Farrar's alt.country outfit Son Volt (who never officially split, to be fair) are recording a new album, the Digable Planets are also working on their new album and planning a US tour, while Motley Crue are "in negotiations" for a reunion tour in 2005 and the promise/threat of new material... Britney Spears is so incensed about the gossip that she's been subjected to - the poor dear - that she's spent a week writing a letter to her fans. Entitled 'The Letter Of Truth: I Hope You Can Handle It,' it promises to answer every question anyone could have ever had about Britney. It's up at her website but - and here's the catch - you'll have to pay $US24.98 to read it. Now there's an artist who respects her fans... To the surprise of no-one in the entire world, legendarily unhinged producer Phil Spector has been charged with murder over the shooting death of D-grade actress Lana Clarkson in his house in February 2003. Spector insists it was a suicide... The Barenaked Ladies are developing a pilot for Fox Broadcasting in the US, showcasing their "kooky" humour and "irritating" music in a comedy/variety format... In other quirky-band-joins-with-evil-multinational-behemoth news, They Might Be Giants are working on an animated DVD about the alphabet under the auspices of Disney Sound. 'Here Come The ABCs' is also likely to come out as a book/CD package.

Sauciness: that's what you're going to get at the Jade Monkey on Fri 8 Oct when Blood Robots, Roo Shooter, Sound Of Mercy Killing, Sweet Raxxx and Denmark's A Prison join forces for a whole lot of rockin'. I mean, just look at those Sweet Raxxx folks...

A few months ago Youth Group got too sick to come over with I [love] Space and ex-Adelaideans Bit By Bats. They promised, however, that they'd return as soon as they could, and Puff's delighted to find that they're a band of their word: all three bands will be making up for their non-appearance by hitting Fowlers Live on Sat 9 Oct. Keep in mind it's an early one, though: doors open at 7pm, since DJ Ian will be spinning the discs at Bang! at 11pm.

Speaking of ex-Adelaideans popping back over, Snap! Krakk! are heading back to their old home town for a show at the Jade Monkey with Love Of Diagrams and The Bird Blobs on Sat 16 Oct. It's in support of their should-be-out-any-second debut CD 'And The Sea Closed In Over Us.'

And they keep pouring in over our eastern borders! Pornland - yet another Adelaide band now resident in Melbourne - have nipped back for a show at the Rhino Room on Sat 9 Oct. They tell Puff there's a DVD on the horizon, as well as a tour to Japan. Is Japan ready for this?

Local kid-rockers Chalk play a non-school, kiddies'n'parents styled show at the Governor Hindmarsh on Sun 10 Oct at the parent-friendly time of 12.30pm.

Still wondering whether or not to get along to the Falls Festival over New Years? Well, you might want to think a bit harder, since tickets are already moving out the door (and, since dB Magazine is now a CIB Ticketing outlet, we can make these sorts of statements based on direct experience) - and just to make it easier, Puff can announce that the lineup now includes Betchadupa, The Spazzys, The Roys, The Vasco Era and Adelaide's own The Hot Lies, joining the likes of De La Soul, Billy Bragg, the John Butler Trio, Spiderbait, Missy Higgins, the Hilltop Hoods, You Am I, Xavier Rudd and many, many more - and there's still more than half of the lineup yet to be revealed! Check out www.fallsfestival.com for information on camping and traveling details for both the Lorne and Tasmania events, and remember you can grab your tickets to The Falls (and lots of other events) right here at dB Magazine.

Dave Graney is heading over to Adelaide for a couple of good reasons: first up, he and his newly monikered band The Lurid Yellow Mist will be playing 'Night Of The Wolverine' (Graney's recently re-released 1993 album) in its entirety, and if that wasn't enough they'll also be joined by New York singer/songwriter Spike Priggen, touring behind his 'Stars After Stars After Stars' CD.

Puff's delighted to see that so many shows are selling out in the town that promoters traditionally call "sleepy" - The Black Eyed Peas' show at Thebarton Theatre on Sat 9 Oct sold out weeks back, and if there are still tickets going for Faithless (Thebbie, Fri 15 Oct) or Chris Isaak (Her Majestys, Thurs 14 Oct) then you'd better grab 'em soon...

It's an all-star lineup at the Enigma Bar on Sat 9 Oct: The Grand Silent System return with touring buddies Velure for a gig with Special Patrol, making an infrequent appearance in their hometown.

Tickets to the long-awaited return of TISM to an Adelaide stage are slipping out the door at a rate of knots, so if you're planning to get along to see the masked ones tear up Heaven in support of their brand new CD/DVD set 'The White Albun' on Fri 5 Nov, you'd better get a move on...

The next Daggerz Sound System event hits the Crown & Anchor on Thurs 7 Oct with Bad Girls Of The Bible and Sydney's Lifefarce. The 'Farce kids also pop into the Exeter on Fri 8 Oct for a show with Sumi.

Perth's Base.tv is coming to Adelaide's Channel 31 - but only for a little while. They'll be screening episodes of the Perth show for the next few weeks at 8.30pm on Wednesday nights as of Wed 6 Oct, but they hope to have an all-Adelaide version up and running before too long. They're after content too, and locals will have the opportunity for their material to be played on the Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney versions of Base.tv - check out www.base.tv for more information, or tune in to Channel 31.

More stuff from Puff: Yusuf Islam - or The Artist Formerly Known As Cat Stevens Prior To His Conversion To The Islamic Faith - was on a plane to Washington with his daughter to meet with folks from a Nashville record label when the FBI presumably decided that since he'd been affiliated with various peace groups, was Islamic and wrote Father And Son they didn't want him in their country. Hence, a diversion to Bangor in Maine to be taken off the plane, held and questioned by the Department of Homeland Security and then popped back on a plane to the UK. "Ever since I embraced Islam in 1977, people have regularly tried to link me with things I have nothing to do with," Islam wrote in a statement. "I am a man of peace and I denounce all forms of terrorism and injustice; it is simply outrageous for anyone to suggest otherwise." UK prog-rock band Marillion were also on the plane but no-one arrested them, despite Kayleigh... In keeping with his bad-boy image, rapper Nas was to appear in court on Tues 28 Sept to face charges of throwing a bottle at a man in a New York nightclub, but the case has been adjourned until November... meanwhile, fellow rapper Mase - who'd dropped out of what Puff is assured is called "the game" some time back - was to be honoured at the 'Welcome Back' concert in New York on Sat 25 Sept, where he was to play his first live performance since retiring. Unfortunately he decided the day before the show that he'd sooner not bother, a decision that didn't play well with the fans who'd flocked to the event. Fat Joe & the Terror Squad, Elephant Man, Mobb Deep, Lil' Flip and The Diplomats were among the performers at the Mase-free event and the promoters are said to be planning to sue Mase for breach of contract and to recover the $US43,000 they'd already paid him to appear... Robert Downey Jr is set to follow in the footsteps of such acclaimed talents as Milla Jovavich, Minnie Driver and Billy Bob Thornton by releasing an album - the as-yet-untitled album will be out through Sony Classical in November... and finally, it seems that after almost a decade recording under his own name Evan Dando is to resurrect The Lemonheads' name for his next album. You might recall that Dando was here recently performing with the reformed MC5, but he's left the tour, citing the need to "finish writing the next Lemonheads record. The MC5 tour inspired me greatly and I'm now ready to get back to working on my own music," according to his website.

Heavens to Betsy - that's a whole lot of the good stuff, and you'll miss all of it unless you...
