Kaotic Lounge
+ Superlux
Jade Monkey, Fri 27 Aug
A Friday night at the Jade Monkey and the typically pleasant atmosphere is made more pleasant by acoustic duo Kiosk warming the crowd before the hard rock kicked off. Kaotic Lounge fired up next, keen to strut their hard rockin' stuff. They hit the stage with quite a presence and were very noticeable. This is a band obviously pushing for recognition. Most enjoyable is the two-pronged guitar attack. Pete and Chris are in sync and inventive and the band are clearly well rehearsed. However, being well rehearsed doesn't always equate to cohesiveness and the recent addition of vocalist Bec is a 50/50 in my opinion. Although talented and sporting a good, strong voice, Bec too often looked like she was standing out front doing her own thing. She had a look that seemed a bit too glamorous for a night at The Jade Monkey and maybe too glamorous to be in sync with her band mates. Bec also made her way down off the stage to sing face-to-face with the crowd, which was well received, but not the sort of thing I'm keen on.
Although well rehearsed Kaotic Lounge lacked a little spontaneity and didn't show enough of the fun side of what they do. On the other hand, Superlux seemed to be having a great time. Maybe they weren't as well rehearsed as the band that had preceded them, but they seemed to enjoy themselves, and that always rubs off on the crowd. Guitarist Peter Henry certainly likes to have a laugh and really likes his digital delay pedal. Superlux rocked out and sounded good even though the vocals were a bit too 'Nickelback' for my liking, but each to their own.
