I was bang up for a dose of Thursday night dancing, but dance the people did not. Although the crowd was of an average size, the Uni bar did nothing to flatter the numbers there and instead gave the show a disjointed, impersonal feel.

Lake, a solo man on a mission, bravely opened the night and although first impressions were to the effect of "Egads, man!" his perseverance won me over. Wolf And Cub were second on the bill but it seems they won't be playing second fiddle for long. These cubs have got something and that 'something' may not be 'variety,' but who's being picky? What they lack in physical meat and muscle they make up for in Rapture-esque percussion and equally percussive bass. One thing that irks me though is the lead singer/guitarist. It's not so much him himself that I find irritating, but more so a personal discordance as to whether I think he's too much or just right. I mean, he's no Omar or Cedric, but his attitude and confidence on stage indicates otherwise, which is off-putting. Then again, even the greats start somewhere and as long as his showiness doesn't take over the show, they're a damn fine band.

And that's why I love Cut Copy. All pretentiousness left in the tight pants it came in, giving way to front man Dan Whitford who loped on stage in a baggy jumper and left with a sincere "thank you." It's bands like this that you want to give something back to, but the crowd seemed to be on the pretentious side of things with barely a nodding head to be seen. Even the response to a specific request to dance to Saturdays was poorly executed and an hour of ample dance opportunities was snubbed by all concerned. The set list was essentially 'Bright Like Neon Love' on shuffle with Rendez-vous thrown in for good measure and ending with That Was Just A Dream. Cut Copy overcame two string breaks to put on a good show, but for what and for whom? Someone should remind Adelaide that you've got to give a little to get a little.
