In The Grey.

In The Grey

I could tell that In The Grey's Glen Fraser was going to make a good interviewee as soon as I heard the enthusiasm in his voice. That night they were heading down to Sydney, but not to play a show.

"We are actually just about to go down to Sydney tonight to film some stuff for Below Par, our record label," he explains excitedly. "They're making some sort of DVD featuring all of their bands so we are going down there and going to pretend that we're rich. We are all going to sit around a nice swimming pool and spa and talk about ourselves. It should be pretty cool."

I assumed that the DVD would be their first appearance on camera, but Fraser corrects me. "Actually, we did a dodgy clip for our last single: our other guitarist Dan [Aird] did it, he put all of our live footage and stuff from the road. We thought that we had a single so we might as well dodgy up a clip for it. Dan's a bloody whiz at that type of thing so we just let him go for it."

In The Grey hail from the Central NSW Coast, which seems to be the new birthing ground for emerging talent. Fraser informed me that I wasn't the first person to ask about this phenomenon. "There seems to be a few bands around and everyone just goes out and does their own thing. Then all of a sudden there's all of this hype surrounding it, we're all for it, we're stoked to be a part of the whole thing.

"My theory is that because there are no venues up here and nobody wants to do shows, all of the bands just sit around and practise their asses off - then when you get your first show in Sydney or Newcastle you're pretty well rehearsed. We don't have a venue around here that we can call our own; most bands in Australia have a venue that they can always pack out with their mates and fans. Our best crowd is at least one or two hours away."

In The Grey are also one of the most hardworking bands in Australia at the present time, clocking up an impressive 100 shows in just eight months. "Yeah, we knew we had done a few shows, but once somebody actually gave us the figure we were like 'fuck!' We asked who else has done more and could only think of The Butterfly Effect, so we wanted to push it and become the hardest working band in Australia instead of the second hardest.

"I guess we're pretty lucky because nobody in the band really gets homesick, everyone in the band actually gets toursick. We haven't been doing that much lately and we have just got so much time on our hands. I just feel like we should write another album or something."

In The Grey play at the Enigma Bar on Fri 17 Sept, along with Shotpointblank, Staying At Home and Wendy Icon.
