The Charlatans
Up At The Lake
Island/UMG
To begin with, 'Up At The Lake' gives the impression that it will
play between dancey grooves and more standard rock tunes, just as
so many Charlatans albums have done before. It starts off well with
the bouncy rock tune Up At The Lake (which has some strange
lyrics, I must say). Then it goes into disco territory with the single
Feel The Pressure (produced deftly by the Chemical Brothers).
But from hereon in this is most definitely a rock album. Gone are the tinges of funk, psychedelia, and many of the other sounds they've managed to reference in their 15 year history. The remainder of the album fails to reach the energy level of the first couple of tracks though, and so it's a little disappointing, particularly with couple of weak songs in the middle.
Still, there are some good ones here. There's the piano balladry of
Cry Yourself To Sleep, and Loving You Is Easy (in which
keys man Tony Rogers gets to sing lead vocals), and the final trio
of songs are worth going through the weaker middle section for. One
thing is definite: after such a long time, The Charlatans can still
make an album that stands quite distinctly from their previous ones
- an impressive feat for a band with 15 years behind it.
