Mice Parade
Obrigado Saudade
Bubble Core/Fat Cat/Inertia
One of these days Fat Cat Records are gonna dick us. They can't keep
releasing great records time after time; something's gotta give. However,
Mice Parade (multi-instrumentalist Adam Pierce) and 'Obrigado Saudade'
are upholding the British label's credentials as amongst the best
in the world. The thing about Fat Cat is they make their records family
affairs. Look at their wonderful split 12" series as testament. See
also Pierce's borrowing of Mum's Krist’n Anna Valt_sd—ttir and her
lusty lungs for Two, Three, Fall and Spain,
while fellow label mate Doug Scharin (HiM) plays drums on Out Of
The Freedom World.
New Yorker Adam Pierce (yes, it is an anagram) also plays drums in post-rock ensemble The Dylan Group and runs the Bubble Core imprint. Prolific as he is talented, 'Obrigado Saudade' finds him once again piecing together sumptuous music echoing this time the sounds of Brazil. The title literally means 'obliged homesickness' in Portuguese, and the tropical flavours certainly inhabit the drum lines and melodies. Not overtly a conceptual-sounding record although maintaining a sun-drenched atmosphere, its hazy momentum and inviting instrumentation make it the soundtrack to a summer just passed.
Classical guitars and vibraphones tango with smoothed electronics
and the impressive drumming of Pierce. Vibraphonist Dylan Cristy (The
Dylan Group) is one of three cohorts to join Pierce on the sweet mesmeric
jam Mystery Brethren, an eleven-minute space jazz exploration.
This is one warm-sounding one-man band. Much more playful than standard
post-rock, more happening than ambient, less metallic than IDM, 'Obrigado
Saudade' is enticing and rewarding.
