On Another Note
Love And Mercy/Warner
Aussie hip-hop is growing in leaps and bounds and it's good to see that not only are the more traditional groups like Hilltop Hoods, Koolism and 1200 Techniques getting exposure but that some of the more experimental groups are also getting on the airways. One such group is MKB, whose EP 'On Another Note' is funny, esoteric and entertaining without being... well, wankerish.
This charming EP starts with Heatman, a song which places a senseless
yet clever rhyme much like a Dr Seuss book against a bass-heavy backing
track with some twanging rubber scratching. I Try is similarly
nonsensical, rhyming words and sentences that are as far apart as
the Arctic and Antarctica and Monkey Business takes the typical
hip-hop braggadocio and twists it into a warped parody of itself.
Weathering Industry has a funky breakbeat that borders on d'n'b and
talks, perhaps, about MKB's entry into the music world. Whoops
is jangly, happy nonsense which discusses coming out of the closet,
among other things, and Positive Minds Attract reminds me somewhat
of Ween (a good thing!) with a melodic chorus, acoustic guitar and
great breakbeat. The last tune Summer With You is a little
bit of a disappointment, being a bleepy experimental thing that sounds
like it was made on an Amiga500. Luckily the EP contains a hidden
4 Yams Short of A Jam, which again takes a bunch of rhyming
words and spits them out seemingly at random but with a particular
sense of style, much like a Dali painting.
As their website explains: "As a listener we value your powers of explanation and creative deduction, so we don't nark on you by ranting about the 'deep and meaningfuls' of our tracks," so I won't try to psychoanalyse them either: sit back, relax and enjoy the seven-track day trip into MKB land.
