Icehouse
Heroes
Diva/Warner
There's a sticker that sits proudly on the front of Iva Davies' latest
album that reads "as seen on 7". That's because the title track, a
cover of Bowie's Heroes, was used to advertise the Olympic
television coverage. Yeah, I thought they just used The Wallflowers'
version too.
'Heroes' is a basically a re-packaging of the 1995 album, 'The Berlin
Tapes', stemming from the recording of this new version of Heroes.
There's an older, piano-based version of Heroes. In fact, the whole
album's quite mellow, and Davies does good justice to songs by Talking
Heads, XTC, Simple Minds, and more. Especially good is dramatic take
on The Velvet Underground's All Tomorrow's Parties. The rendition
of Sinatra's All The Way is a bit corny, but it's the only
real blip here.
The new version of Heroes has been tacked on to the end of
the record, and feels that way. It's not representative of the older
material, but I suppose this was the best way to bring out the recording:
it gives people a chance to rediscover what was actually a decent
covers record.
If you liked the version of Heroes used on TV and the phrase
"Icehouse covers record" catches your fancy, then by all means get
this record. However, if you don't really care about the by-the-nmbers
Heroes rehash, you're actually better off getting the 2002
remastered version of 'The Berlin Tapes'. It features a version of
The Cure's At Night which for some reason was omitted from
'Heroes,' along with five extra tracks.
