Art Of Fighting
Second Storey
Trifekta/Shock
What is beautiful music? For the last month or so, everybody who has spoken of Art Of Fighting's sensational second album, 'Second Storey', has used the word "beautiful" over and over again. And while a sunset, or a night sky, can be beautiful without even trying, what are Ollie Browne and co. doing to their music to achieve such great heights?
Maybe it's because only the most stubbornly cold could possibly fail
to be moved by the time the final track, Heart Translation,
has finished. This record, with its sparse and vibrant textures and
warm, inviting vocals, is one of the most emotionally touching pieces
of music ever released. The slow and heart-warming melodies envelope
you until the world seems like a meek distraction to this record.
You simply can't possibly feel lonely listening to this band.
First song and first single, Along The Run, is a slow warmer,
opening the door to the first half of the album, which is (strangely)
the slower and less engaging half. Two Rivers, the last song
on this half, moves along at a snail's pace, allowing us to enjoy
the warm summer vibes of Ollie Browne's voice, and prepare ourselves
for the album's second quasi-side. Then we are introduced to the vocals
of Peggy Frew (also a great, animated singer), with Where Trouble
Lived, and the album picks up its shoes and starts running. Sing
Song even has a bit of a groove to it, and a brilliant guitar
sound. Real Time has a little electronic pulse start through
it, moving into a superb melody piece. And Come Round & Show Me,
my personal favourite, is just marvellous.
What is beautiful music? Well, friends, just listen to Art Of Fighting. You'll figure it out.
