Angie Stone
Stone Love
J Records/BMG
Angie Stone has been one of the most significant and influential artists in the neo-soul movement of r'n'b music. However, unlike other neo-soul divas such as Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott and Erikah Badu, Stone has had little Australian commercial success in comparison. With this, her third album, she hopes to capture the commercial success that she so richly deserves. I was concerned that Stone's venture towards the commercial market would compromise the neo-soul ethos that she helped pioneer and embrace. Fortunately, 'Stone Love' removed any doubt from my mind that Stone is a genuine neo-soul diva.
In true Stone style, this album is full of songs about love and all its dimensions, but without the cheese. Stone sings about living love and loving life. The album takes the listener into a nostalgic trip back to the days of Marvin Gaye, The Commodores and Stevie Wonder and blends soul, r'n'b, jazz, funk and hip hop to produce sounds which sadly has been missing in the current crop of r'n'b music.
Although 'Stone Love' may not be as deep and influential as previous releases 'Black Diamond' and 'Mahogany Soul,' it is still a very credible album with contributions from Jazze Pha, Snoop Dogg, Aaron Hamilton and Missy Elliot, which may prove to be Stone's key to commercial success.
