Puff 'n' Stuff.

Hey, it's not just about the rock/publishing/arts and entertainment here at dB Magazine: we have souls, you know. Hence, Puff reckons serious props are due to dB Magazine's general manager Sid Eyers-White who took out second place in Class 73: Novice Section Pesto (Any Variety) at this year's Royal Show - the very first time she entered! Kudos!

It's also a neat tie-in to the announcement of the Second dB Readers Awards, or as we like abbreviate it around these parts, the dBras (as in debra)! We're wanting YOU, beloved reader, to nominate your favourite local band, venue, solo artist, release, new act and more. The top five in each category will go into the voting round, making the dBras South Australia's only music-related award that's entirely decided by you, the gig-going public! Log on to dbmagazine.com.au and make your opinions known.

Onto the whole CD launching thing: those comedy-funk types Sledgehammock are finally launching their 'Every Inch A Healthy Horse' CD-EP with a showcase at Jive on Fri 10 Sept, supported by Ergot, Aclinic Line and Miracle Hat.

Tidal are also doing this whole "CD launch" thing at the Adelaide UniBar on Sat 9 Oct, what with them having their full-length abum 'Impulsive Disturbance' set for release through Greasy Pop/MGM on Mon 20 Sept.

Dominian are set to launch their new CD at the Crown & Anchor on Sat 18 Sept, along with Double Dragon.

Muscle Car haven't quite finished work on their forthcoming double A-side single, which they reckon should be out late November, but they are playing a post-studio show at the Crown & Anchor on Fri 10 Sept with Melbourne's The Hybernators.

BetchadupaBetchadupa are just about ready to release their new album, merrily entitled 'Aiming For Your Head', but just to be sure they're testing their new material out live - and you can be part of their rock'n'roll focus group by getting along to the Enigma Bar on Fri 10 Sept. Proceedings will be moderated by the statistical types from Love Outside Andromeda and Bad Girls Of The Bible.

Michael Dixon, local keysperson and member of The Rest, returned to his car on Sat 28 Aug to find that some kind person had helped themselves to his Fender Rhodes and Yamaha P-100 keyboards which were sitting there uninsured after a gig. He's less than delighted with this and is putting out the call to anyone who might know their whereabouts, or happens to have some vintage keyboards lying around: if you have any information, give him a call on 0411 641 073. Tell him Puff sent you.

Congratulations are due to Plain Jane's Gloria Albanese who took out four - count 'em! - awards at the recent 2004 FOOM awards, run by the good people of SCALA. She co-won the Live and Demo open sections, picked up a Star Encouragement Awards and took out another award for lyrics. Nice going.
Von Bondies
It's true: The Von Bondies are returning to Adelaide after enjoying their debut visit so much earlier this year: this time they'll be bringing the rock to Fowlers Live on Wed 29 Oct, along with touring buddies The Cops.

Stuff from Puff: Director Kevin Smith has put his screen adaptation of 'The Green Hornet' aside in order to do a sequel to his 1994 debut 'Clerks,' set ten years after the first film. Brian O'Halloran (Dante) and Jeff Anderson (Randal) have already signed on for 'The Passion Of The Clerks,' which is sure to also have Jason Mewes as Jay and Smith as Silent Bob... Michael Jackson's request to have his $3 million bail lowered have been rejected by the judge presiding over his current child molestation case on the grounds that Jackson had previously made plans to flee to Brazil with the family of one of his accusers in order to escape similar charges. The ruling comes amid new allegations that Jackson paid off potential accusers with up to US$2 million to ensure they wouldn't testify. Jackson has confirmed the allegations... Influence, meet protege: the new album for The Raveonettes will feature legendary Velvet Underground drummer Moe Tucker on five tracks... The annual 'In The City' music showcase in Manchester will have an impressive Australian contingent in late September, with Pete Murray, The Panics, Shutterspeed, Waikiki, The Gasolinos and Riff Random waving the flag on our nation's behalf... Social Distortion and bassist John Maurer have parted ways. He'll be replaced by Rancid's Matt Freeman on their upcoming US tour... No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani's forthcoming solo record is set to be chock-full of star guests, including New Order, Wendy & Lisa, Eve and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode... and Pete Doherty from The Libertines has been given a four month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to possessing a knife. Doherty, whose criminal convictions and on-again-off-again relationship with his band and heroin has made him rock music's greatest soap opera since Courtney Love, was looking at a possible jail term after a switchblade was found on his person when police pulled him over for a traffic offence. News reporters covering the verdict found Doherty waiting outside the courtrooms early, sitting atop a car and playing acoustic guitar to passers-by. Crazy kid.

Those wacky rock'n'roll kids from Your Wedding Night are set to rock the Jade Monkey in support of their self-titled CD on Sat 18 Sept, along with Hit The Jackpot and Blood Robots.

The fine folks at the Reynella Enterprise & Youth Centre are holding another of their rather succesful Stage Against The Machine nights at the Crossroads on Fri 17 Sept, so if you fancy yourself as something of a performer, get along and do your three songs - and possibly grab yourself some CD giveaways in the bargain!

The first announcement for the fourteenth Meredith festival has just been released and Puff's salivating already: over the weekend of Fri 10 Dec to Sun 12 Dec, the rolling hills of country Victoria will be a-pumping to the sounds of Young Heart Attack, Jolie Holland, Spiderbait, Cobra Killer, the Hilltop Hoods, Dallas Crane, True Live, Sage Francis, Wolfmother, Ground Components, Combo La Revelacion, CW Stoneking and, in their return performance ten years and one day since last they strode upon the Meredith stage, The Dirty Three. And that's just for starters! Ticketing and camping details are up at www.mmf.com.au.

Former Adelaide lad and frontman for The Icecream Hands, Mr Charles Jenkins, returns to his old home town for a solo show at the Grace Emily on Wed 8 Sept.

What the hell do we have to do? Shows are selling out left, right and centre in Adelaide and still bands keep avoiding us. Among the latest to do so are Grant Lee Phillips (with band, east coast only), The Muffs (ditto) and Stereolab (everywhere but us). Join Puff in the traditional call: Cheers, bastards.

More stuff from Puff: Slayer's lead singer Tom Araya was rushed to hospital with suspected kidney stones or a severe allergic reaction, forcing the cancellation of a show on their US tour... Ben Harper, whose new album is due out any second now, has announced his engagement to long-time girlfriend, actress Laura Dern. The pair have a three year old son and are expecting another child... The Dance Music Hall Of Fame holds its inaugural ceremony on Mon 20 Sept. Inductees include Barry White, the Bee Gees, Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer, among others... According to the impeccable sources at Popbitch, Nick Cave (whose new double album 'Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus' drops any second) has written a sequel to Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator' and has sent the script to the director... Weezer have announced that they've scrapped the album they were working on with producer Rick Rubin and are starting again from scratch, producing it all themselves (as per 'Pinkerton' and 'Maladroit'). Apparently Rubin is still involved, albeit in more of a "mentor"-style role... For reasons that make no sense to Puff, Twisted Sister have re-recorded their 1984 album 'Stay Hungry.' Yes, re-recorded. The new version also includes seven contemporaneous but previously unreleased songs. Clearly there's a demand for newly recorded versions of We're Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock that Puff was hitherto unaware of... Ashanti has taken on the Dorothy role in the forthcoming Muppets version of 'The Wizard Of Oz,' with Queen Latifah playing the Auntie Em role. The Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and Wicked Witch of the West roles will be taken by Kermit, Gonzo, Fozzie and Miss Piggy, respectively. Even so, it's got to be better then 'The Wiz'... and the new album for ... And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead has been pushed back until early 2005, despite having been completed since July. The band have also announced that bassist Neil Busch has left the band due to "severe health problems," with Danny Wood of The Rise taking on recent live duties.

Vale Laura Branigan: the 47 year old singer, best known for her 70s work with Leonard Cohen and her 1982 mega-hit Gloria (or, as Pulp called it, Disco 2000) died in her sleep on Thurs 26 Aug from an undiagnosed brain aneurysm. She had stopped performing in 1996 after the death of her husband Lawrence Kruteck, but was said to be working on an album of all-new material after the success of her off-Broadway play 'Love, Janis'.

Whilst on the subject of death comes word that Carl Wayne, former frontman of The Move, has lost his battle with cancer on Tues 31 Aug at the age of 61. Wayne had also served a late-period stint fronting The Hollies.

The Kandinsky Sessions are a-happening again, with an all-star lineup at Jive on Fri 17 Sept, including The Phobias, Adult Bookstore and Concrete Child. What's more, it's entirely free!

Enigmatic hard rock legend Jeff Scott Soto will be letting his voice ring around the Enigma Bar on Thurs 9 Sept when he rocks it, alongside Teargas.

Frenzal RhombFrenzal Rhomb aren't very taken by the whole "Howard Government" thing, which would explain why their guitarist Lindsay McDougall has spearheaded the release of the 'Rock Against Howard' CD and it's accompanying tour with The Herd, where they'll be trying to convince you, the kids, to vote for a party that Howard's not the leader of. Said tour lands at Heaven on Fri 10 Sept, with Snap To Zero bringing the local flava.

The mad people behind Trasharama are well advanced on their plans for the October film festival, but need to raise a few dollars to make sure it's the artistic triumph they're hoping for. Hence, they're holding one hell of a fundraising event - not only are they getting The Ramonettes to play (their last show before they head off on their European tour, no less) but they've unearthed all sorts of astonishing archival footage from Adelaide's punk underground over the last 25 years (including the likes of The Mark Of Cain, The Accountants, the Exploding White Mice, Angelik, Perdition, The Killchoir Project, King Daddy and The Dagoes, not to mention the banned Kamikaze nude woman/python/graveyard clip and they're screening it at Jive on Sun 12 Sept. It kicks off at 6pm and entry is a scant $3.

Mark KozelekNow, Mark Kozelek is an honest-to-god legend in certain indie-folk circles, from his years recording as underground hero The Red House Painters to his current work under the moniker Sun Kil Moon. What's more, we're getting him in solo, intimate mode in what could well be the gig of the year: he'll be quietly blowing people's heads off at the Grace Emily on Thurs 23 Sept.

Puff's glad to welcome a new studio to town: Sweetlips boutique studio's point of difference is that they offer a complete arrangement and session package where pretty much all you have to do is turn up and tell 'em what you want. What's more, they're offering a 20% discount for all dB Magazine readers who book during September: call Kristian on 0439 689 210 for all the details.

Raw Honey are trying out adding some drums to their harmony-laced folk - the drums of Rob Eyers, to be specific, who'll be sitting in with them at the Wheatsheaf during their afternoon set on Sun 19 Sept.

Heck, if there was any more going on in Adelaide at the moment we'd have to get another Adelaide just to accommodate it - in any case, you'd be a gosh-durned fool were you not to...
