Rise Against
Siren Song Of The Counter Culture
Geffen/UMG
I only got into Rise Against about six months when one of my mates
lent me their previous release, 'Revolutions Per Minute' and it absolutely
blew my head off. I knew there was another release on the horizon
so I was holding my breath... and then it happened one night. I was
listening to Triple J's Short, Fast Loud when a song immediately caused
my ears to prick up. The song was Give It All and I was tossing
up between Good Riddance and AFI when I heard it was from the new
Rise Against album and nearly wet my pants. The unassuming verse leads
into a powerful chorus filled with awesome bass runs reminiscent of
Rancid or even The Descendents.
So, to the album: Rise Against are the new nemesis of homogeneity
in music. Although there is a common musical theme in all of their
songs that clearly identifies them, their base is broader than that
of most bands. I guess if someone forced me to categorise their music
I would say... well, I wouldn't say anything: I'd poke them in the
eye and run away. They range from fast paced poppish-punk (Paper
Wings, Tip The Scales) which reminds me of all of the bands
like Good Riddance and Propagandhi that I used to idolise back in
1994, to anthemic, ballsy new punk tunes like Blood To Bleed.
If I were you I would skip the first track, State Of The Union:
it's a lot more hardcore than the real Rise Against and just doesn't
have the hooks (although it does have a lot of power). 'Siren Song
Of The Counter Culture' is also filled with lyrics that actually make
you feel something: not exactly positive, perhaps, but they at least
make you feel like you have the power to fight what you hate.
This album makes me want to run down the street and yell random phrases at people I don't like with my fist raised high in the air. I hope I've got my message across: I liked it.
