I'm one of the 117 people to own Evil Nine's 'You Can Be Special
Too' on vinyl, but that doesn't make me happy. The reason there's
only 117 people who own it is Marine Parade, Adam Freeland's
record label, has gone into forced liquidation as it's distributor,
3MV, recalled outstanding debts unexpectedly a few weeks ago.
The label was forced to close and cancel all its current projects
as a result, including the release of Evil Nine's album and
new single. Whilst a blow to both Freeland and Evil Nine, they
claim they're on track to get the album out by mid-September,
just in time for Evil Nine's Australian Tour.
Downsyde were recently signed to Obese Records
and claim they are "psyched about working with Australia's premier
hip-hop label for the new record. Working with a label that
understands the music on this level will give us the freedom
and support they were looking for." This includes getting rid
of copy control protection on their CD releases, releasing more
vinyl, and pretty much anything else they feel like doing. To
celebrate, Downsyde have release two of their new singles Bring
It All Back and Street Machines for free download from www.downsyde.com.au
The Technical Freaks World Tour featuring Dylan and Technical
Itch is set to hit Adelaide for the first time. Long pioneering
the sounds of the drum'n'bass infused with rock, hip-hop and
cinematic influences, between the two of them, they have numerous
tunes on many labels. Get along to see these masters of the
darkside at Heaven's Surgery on Thurs 16 Sept.
Speaking of the dark, Amon Tobin has just
been commissioned to do the music for 'Tom Clancy's Splinter
Cell Chaos Theory,' hot on the heels of his release of 'Solid
Steel 4.' Tobin explains, "No concessions were made that would
compromise the integrity of the soundtrack, and that's rare
in a project of this scale."
There's some massive hip-hop tours on the way, with the Thievery
Corporation, Music Vs Physics, Macromantics and mkB, X-cutioners,
Mark Rae and DJ Shortkut over the next month or so, and the
hippies of hiphop De La Soul touching down at the end of the
year.
And it seems like there is a god of hip-hop
after all, as rap superstar 50 Cent was forced to end his set
at Britain's Reading Festival after being booed and abused by
the crowd. Disenchanted music lovers at the event began berating
the star before the lights had even gone up on his performance.
As he took the stage he was met with chants of "50 Cent is a
wanker" and missiles, including a chair. The rapper then attempted
to calm the crowd by pleading, "We're just all here to have
fun," then aggravated them further by throwing missiles back
and encouraging them to raise their middle fingers. After just
25 minutes, the rapper gave up and left the stage.
