Puff 'n' Stuff.

Puff loves to see Adelaide's creative types commiting the works of their respective muses to CD, so these are some sweet, sweet times. There's a huge amount of CD launchery coming up, so let's start with the double-barrelled launch action of Ianto Ware (late of Hardy Coxon) launching his 'No Sleep Et Al' CD alongside Matt's Little Brother (aka Stevie Banham, often seen banging things in The Sunroom) who is launching his 'The Future Is A Terrible Place To Raise Children' CD. They're joined by an all-star lineup of Brillig, Leigh StarDust, Paper Tiger and Melbourne visitors Teen God. Here's Ianto and Stevie, being just too gosh-durn cute:

Also on the launch trail are Enemy Of? who will launch their seven-track CD at the Enigma Bar on Fri 13 Aug, along with Truth Corroded, Procedure 286 and Double Dragon.

Fri 13 Aug is also the date that Thomas C Barton (most often seen as one quarter of The Laybacks) launches his new website and solo EP 'Altered Heights Vol 1' at the Jade Monkey, along with No Through Road and The Sunroom.

That's not all: Luke Ashby & The Lonely Crowd launch 'The Late Night Review' at Fowlers on Fri 13 Aug, with Special Patrol along for the ride.

And it just keeps on coming! Salty are launching their debut at the Wheatsheaf Hotel on Sat 14 Aug, with support from Krusader Rabbit.

That all-grrrl punk juggernaut that is Star 10 Hash release their long-awaited CD with a launch at Jive on Sat 21 Aug.

Mirrorline have just released their self-titled CD. Foreshore have just released their 'Imagine If' CD-EP. The News haven't released anything lately. However, they're all joining forces for an all-ages show at Fowlers Live on Fri 6 Aug. Mirrorline trust you'll be able to make it:

STR are feeling the love again since reactivating a few months back: they're bringing the all-ages punk action to Fowlers Live on Sun 1 Aug, alongside Cheapshot, The Jerks, Stolen Youth, Bullet The Blue Sky, The RIP and Flagfall. Doors are at 4.30, so be early.

Circle Clan bassist Chris "Humann" Uhlmann passed away from cancer in August 2002. Sat 31 July 2004 marks the first Humann Benefit in his memory, with his bandmates reconvening for their only show this year in order to raise money to support the excellent work of the Mary Potter Hospice at Calvary Hospital. Red Monika, The Gels, Later That Night, Muscle Car, Double Dragon and Burn the Ashes have also donated their services for the night: a fine opportunity to support a deserving cause and toast the memory of a fine and much-missed chap. It's all-ages and kicks off at 4.30pm.

Iron & Wine were here earlier this year with The Shins, but now the well-bearded Sam Beam is returning under his own steam for a show in the absolutely perfect confines of the Grace Emily on Wed 6 Oct.

Actually, Puff's delighted to see there's a few intimate gigs happening at the Grace in the coming months: Mark Kozelek (perhaps better known as the Red House Painters) is also coming to the Grace for what's likely to be a stunning show on Thurs 23 Sept.

The eleventh edition of the Regression punk 'zine is out shortly (complete with double CD, no less) and it's getting a proper launch with a show at the Land Of Promise Hotel on Sat 7 Aug with a bunch of the acts profiled within, with Shrunken Headz, Kamikaze, NFI, Madbatch, Sixty Miles An Hour, Bombscare and Hi-End Audio all making an appearance.

Stuff from Puff: a Sebadoh reunion seems to be a strong possibility - Lou Barlow and Jason Loewenstein have been touring the US together and pulling out the odd classic... In one of the worst kept secrets in rock (not helped by the in-studio webcam Trent Reznor set up for fans to watch) Dave Grohl has been drumming on the long, long, long awaited new Nine Inch Nails album 'Bleed Through,' due later this year... Lawsuit corner: Megadeth bassist David Ellefson is suing frontman Dave Mustaine for $18.5 million after Mustaine pulled out of a deal to turn Megadeth Inc over to Ellefson after the band's split in 2002... Jello Biafra, however, has dropped his counter-suits against his former bandmates in the Dead Kennedys - East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride and D.H. Peligro - after three years contesting the San Francisco Superior Court's May 2000 ruling awarding them more than $200,000 in damages after finding Biafra defrauded them out of earnings. Biafra claims he's dropped the charges due to frustration with the US legal system... Bjork's long awaited new album should be out late August: it's called 'Medulla,' it's based almost entirely around vocal melodies and beatboxing with very few actual instruments and features guest appearances by the likes of Mike Patton, Rahzel, Inuit throat-singer Tanya Tagaq, Matmos and fellow Icelandic muso Valgeir Sigurdsson from Mum... And Brunatex have almost finished work on their as-yet-untitled second full-length album - and perhaps they'd have finished a while ago if they didn't muck around posing for wacky photographs: insert your own "sex symbol/cymbal" pun here:

After wowing audiences at the Morrissey-curated Meltdown Festival, the reunited New Yok Dolls have been dealt a bitter blow with the surprise death of bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane. Kane presented at hospital in the UK with suspected pneumonia, which turned out to be undiagnosed leukemia. The band were scheduled to play in Japan in late July, as well as taking The Vines' spot at the Reading and Leeds festivals. A new Dolls album is due in September. Rest well, Mr Kane.

There's all-ages rock action happening at the Willunga Football Oval for Decibel Day on Sat 31 July when State Of Disorder, Sandcrak, Castros, The Bottom Line, Korvus and Granny Flat strut their stuff from 4pm. What's more, there'll be show rides, sideshows and fireworks!

The Seeds Of Babylon are in a good mood at the moment. And why not? The first pressing of their album 'The Indian Cabaret' is but a stone's throw from selling out (not bad, considering it only just got released), Medicinal Reggae is all over Triple J and they're about to head off on a national tour. Hence, you should catch them while you can: they're at Rhino Room on Sat 31 July (with Sal Paradise and Shock Tactics) and Thurs 5 Aug at the Jade Monkey (for Velveteen Habit's CD launch).

Were you thinking about getting tickets to Pete Murray's show at Thebbie on Fri 6 Aug? Well, if you haven't grabbed your ticket yet, you've missed the boat: the show has completely sold out. Sorry.

Hence, you might want to get in early with some of those popular tours - like, for example, those chart-topping noiseniks Spiderbait, who play the Adelaide UniBar on Sat 4 Sept with Goodshirt and Ground Components.

They wowed US audiences on their triple-header tour with Jet and The Vines, now they're heading home: they're The Living End and they're at Thebarton Theatre on Sun 3 Oct.

The charming and erudite Mr Richard Easton is bringing his '2000 Demolition Songs' album to town for a show at the Jade Monkey on Sat 7 Aug, supported by the acoustic gorgeousness of Sodastream (who were astonishing at their last Jade Monkey show).

The Lucksmiths bring their acoustic poppery to the Jade Monkey on Fri 30 July, with support from equally strummy locals Paper Tiger.

Those kooky gals from Legless are in the mood for a party to celebrate their depraved first year of action: hence, they're going to do just that at the Crown & Anchor on Fri 31 July - and be warned, they're promising naughty party games, balloons, face painting and more. That "more" also includes Loemax.

The spoken-wordsmiths of Paroxysm Press are gearing up before heading to Melbourne for the Overload Poetry Festival: catch them polishing their lyrical chops at the SA Writers Centre Fri 30 July.

There are some new/old faces on the rock scene. First up, there's Amberlist (which boasts ex members of Suzi's Backyard, Cyberdyne Systems and Almost Human) who are about to release their 'Lost My Way' CD and will be a-rockin' at Le Rox (Bridgeway Hotel) on Fri 30 July. Then there's Darby (featuring Josh and Dieter from Honeyfix) who make their live debut at the Rhino Room on Thurs 29 July and Jive on Fri 30 July.

More stuff from Puff: the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion have shortened their name to The Blues Explosion and will release their first album under the new moniker in September, entitled 'Damage!'... also on the imminent-release trail is Leonard Cohen ('Dear Heather,' his first album of new material since 2001's excellent 'Ten New Songs') and, er, William Shatner ('Has Been,' featuring co-writes with the album's producer Ben Folds and novellist Nick Hornby, as well as a cover of Pulp's Common People)... Don't head east for the Blonde Redhead shows - they've cancelled their Australian tour, claiming that "in the best interests of band health... the Australian tour time frame [is] better suited to resting."... And while we're on the subject of cancellations, official word is that the Livid festival will not happen in 2004, supposedly due to "the scarcity of headline acts on this year's international festival touring circuit." The promoters promise the east coast tour will return in 2005. For Adelaide, it means no Loudmouth this year... U2 rather embarrassingly lost a CD containing songs from their forthcoming album when The Edge left it somewhere in Nice during a photo session - they're rather hoping that a good Samaritan returns it rather than, say, posts the tracks online... The Pogues are reforming for a UK tour in December, complete with errant frontman Shane MacGowan, who left the band in 1991... A tribute album to the late Warren Zevon will include tracks by Bruce Springsteen, the Pixies, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne and, er, Adam Sandler (who does Werewolves Of London, incidentally)... Composer Jerry Goldsmith ('Alien,' 'The Omen,' 'Poltergeist,' The Man From UNCLE,' 'Mulan' and many, many more) died of cancer on Wed 21 July at the age of 75... and REM have reportedly finished work on their twelfth, as-yet-untitled album (and first with new permanent drummer William Reiflen, whose resume includes stints with the Revolting Cocks, Lard, Ministry, Swans and Nine Inch Nails). Word is it's mighty political and hence the band are planning to get it into stores a few weeks before the US elections. Rock that vote, lads.

This winter thing can't last for too much longer, right? There's got to be a reason for you to...
