Ugly Duckling
Pigeon John, MCs Delta & Muskrat, DJs Denorthwode & Tightpants
Traffic, Thurs 1 July

As a vegetarian, it might come as a surprise that a night revolving around 'meat shakes' was one of the best in my life. Ugly Duckling were in Adelaide to promote their 'Meatshake' franchise and to bring a whole lot of meaty goodness in the form of beats and rhymes. Appearing in fast food attire complete with aprons, MCs Dizzy Dustin and Andy Cooper didn't set a foot or rhyme wrong to be unanimously voted joint Employees of the Month.

Local MCs and DJs started the night with DJ Kim Dezen and MCs Delta and Muskrat putting in solid performances. And then it was Pigeon John's turn to step up to the mic. Anyone but Ugly Duckling would have been upstaged by this master entertainer but instead his humour and energy complemented UD to a tee, and he even came back as various characters throughout their set, including the Meatshake mascot, Pete the Cow. Pigeon Johnny had the crowd twisted around his little wing from the word go, opening with a song dedicated to "all the girls who used to diss me." Johnny continued to 'rock AD' but it was so hard to dance because every Pigeon rhyme and action had me laughing uncontrollably. Ending his set dancing to The Beatles and The Strokes, Pigeon John gained a club full of new fans (each with consumer power, the merch stand being swamped by newly converted Pigeon lovers). All I can say is 'Go Pigeon, go!'

Ugly Duckling's Young Einstein warmed up the decks before Andy Cat loped on stage and Pigeon Johnny returned for the MeatShake interlude from their 'Taste The Secret' album. The UD set had everything from skits to a 'taste the secret sculling competition' and most importantly a collection of songs that never failed to get the crowd dancing. With oldies such as Pick Up Line and Eye On The Gold Chain fluidly melding into Pass It On, La Revolucion, Rio De Janeiro and Turn It Up from 'Taste The Secret', UD's Meatshake brought all the girls to the club, 'cause their songs are better than yours. Damn right.
