Pacifier
Snap To Zero, The Hot Lies
Crown Hotel, Victor Harbor, Fri 3 July

As per usual it was bloody freezing by the time I made it down to the Crown at Victor. I travelled down with three hardcore Pacifier fans and was relying on them to give me a bit of input for my review, since I hadn't seen PacIfier since they headlined two nights at the Holdfast Hotel many a long year ago.

The Hot Lies were up first and the small scattered crowd that had arrived moved in close to see them. The band haven't released anything to the public yet so the only song I was familiar with was their cracker of a radio single Bullets & Black Lines. Judging by the reaction of the crowd everyone enjoyed it: even though the band are new to the scene, the members have experience coming out of their collective arse and this shone through as they rocked passionately through their tight set.

Up next were Snap To Zero. I went up to the front for the first couple of songs, as did everyone else, but then decided to opt for a couch. They struck me as trying to sound like Faith No More crossed with Rage Against The Machine crossed with Beaverloop. I also thought they sounded a bit dated but from what I could see from my comfortable position the crowd disagreed with my perspective.

At about midnight, with the Crown more than half empty, Pacifier leapt onto the stage. The slowly-diminishing crowd didn't seem to bother them, especially not their energetic frontman Jon Toogood. He spent half of the set amping the audience up with true rock'n'roll banter, crowd surfing and leaps to the lighting rig. About three songs into the set he admitted he had forgotten to bring a belt, a problem solved when a friendly punter donated theirs.

The show was really good and I was surprised at how many songs I recognised, leaving me keen to tell my friends about my new appreciation of Pacifier's sound. To my surprise they all thought the show sucked; but I'm doing the review, so it gets a thumbs up.
