John Butler Trio
Missy Higgins
Thebarton Theatre, Wed 30 June
I considered myself to be one of the lucky ones, scoring a ticket to the sold-out John Butler Trio show. Having never been to one of their gigs I couldn't even begin to imagine the treat I was in for, but it far exceeded any expectations and will forever be the yardstick by which all great concerts are measured. A big call I know, but thoroughly deserved nonetheless.
The night began with one of Australia's best up and coming artists, Missy Higgins. She began her set with Dancing Dirt In To The Snow, following with crowd favourites such as All For Believing and Greed For Your Love. The emotion conveyed in her songs was really quite moving and the audience responded accordingly. Even though the subject matter was fairly similar between songs the style varied from bluesy to melodic to up-tempo with a slight rock influence - and the sound she put out was enormous for such a waif-like creature!
People kept trickling in to Thebby throughout Higgins' set (not realising the quality performance they had missed out on) to gain their possies for the headliners.
The venue was packed and the atmosphere electric as Butler and Co. strolled on to the stage to roaring cheers and applause. Bound and Treat Yo Mama were played with such energy that feeling a part of the music was inevitable. During the lengthy instrumentals that Butler is known and loved for, the 'Trio complemented each other so well that it was hard to work out if what was being played had been rehearsed or was being improvised: everything they played just seemed to work.
The audience lapped up the energy throughout the entire two and a half hour set and standing still was not an option. Butler's groovy, soulful and at times a little bit country music was impossible to resist as heads and toes tapped uncontrollably (for some, a bit of boot scootin' was even thrown in!). The highlight of the evening was Take with all of the Trio on drums, each banging up a storm in one of the most awesome displays of percussion I've ever witnessed.
The John Butler Trio not only delivered an absolutely incredible show but gave each and every person there an experience that will last a lifetime. I was blown away by the enormity of their talent, passion and love for what they do. If you missed out this time, make sure that never happens again. Grab a ticket as soon as they're announced: there's a reason why both shows sold out.
