Gyroscope
The Hot Lies, Sommerset
Enigma Bar, Sun 4 July

Quite a sizable bunch turned out to see Perth's Gyroscope launch their debut full-length at the Enigma Bar - so many that the show sold out and a lot of fans who figured they'd just buy tickets at the door were turned away. Let this be a lesson.

I'm so glad I finally got my ass into gear to see The Hot Lies, because they're pretty freaking good and a definite contender for the highly coveted "My Favourite Local Band" award. The crowd seemed pretty impressed too, with the whole band whipping the crowd into a frenzy. As did New Zealand punkers Sommerset, who took to the stage and played an amazing set of good, old fashioned punk rock - including some of their older songs, much to the delight of some long-time fans who had come along. They mostly played from their upcoming album though which, incidentally, they're coming back to launch in a few weeks time.

In my opinion, Gyroscope have always one of those bands that sound much better live than on a CD. Despite their performance being plagued with technical difficulties, they still managed to put on an amazing show. The band launched into Confidence In Confidentiality before pleasing fans with an energetic rendition of Doctor Doctor, letting fans sing along with the chorus. There seemed to be a lot of equipment problems (with guitarist Brad Campbell even performing a mid-song guitar change late in the set), but while I expected to only play a bunch of songs from 'Sound Shattering Sound', they still managed to throw in a couple of older songs into the mix - including crowd favourite Sharp Words from their Midnight Express EP. But the highlight of the evening came at the very last song, as the boys from Sommerset returned to the stage to help sing (or scream...) Safe Forever. This was an awesome show that no fan could really be disappointed with.
