Mirrorline
Independent/MGM

Following a wall of guitar feedback So I Don't Have To Ask, the opening track of Mirrorline's eponymous CD-EP, soon implodes into a bottom heavy, melodic attack of noise from which vocalists Tom Spall's moderately-ranged falsetto wail emerges triumphantly. Daylight Walkers uses much the same tactic and it is soon obvious that these guys are well and truly prepared to leave their adolescence behind and begin finding their way alongside the grown ups.

Silent Skies, the first of two very long and extremely adventurous numbers, carries Spall's gently-nursed words steadily upwards to the end while the closer Hi, How Are You? employs a more subtle, consistent approach that allows plenty of space for all involved to demonstrate their newfound maturity. While Electrify could be seen as the only straight rocker in this set, How To Win Friends & Influence People again sees Spall's fragile vocals relentlessly bombarded from all directions, holding out against the drums of Ben White and Sean Langcake's manically hammering bass alongside his quasi-classic rock guitar work.

Mirrorline (nee J-Ded) are clearly not afraid to put themselves out on a ledge; while including two seven-minute-plus epics may throw some listeners off, at least we can assuredly expect even bigger things when the time comes to deliver their first album.
