Felix Da Housecat
Bugged In
React/Shock
Chicago house producer/DJ, Felix Da Housecat (real name Felix Stallings) has been in the house scene since the late 80s, and released his first single Phantasy Girl with the help of mentor, and legendary Chicago house DJ, DJ Pierre. He has also released singles and albums under several other monikers, including Thee Maddkatt Courtship, Aphrohead and Sharkimaxx. His latest production, a 2 CD set, is released under the Felix persona.
The first is a mix CD of tracks typical of Felix's vision of house music. It begins with down-tempo house, which some may associate with the 'chill out' sounds that seem to be the 'new black' in electronic music nowadays. Felix then transforms the CD's vibe with sounds much closer to his musical neighbourhood - electro house. It is then you realize how strongly the electro sounds of the mid to late 80s have influenced Felix's work. This is not surprising, as he was highly engrossed in this environment during the birth of his musical career. However, the heavy synthesized and electro sounds of his chosen tracks at times become an overwhelming an orchestra of noise, although some may recognize popular tracks such as Ladytron's Seventeen and Andrea Doria's Bucci Bag.
The second CD is a compilation of tracks that have influenced Felix's musical direction. Mostly comprised of early electronic artists such as Art Of Noise and Depeche Mode, it highlights the sounds that Felix try to emulate or pay tribute to within his productions. Though the likes of Kraftwerk, George Clinton and Devo are missing from this compilation, listeners will gain an intimate understanding of Felix's take on house music.
