Puff 'n' Stuff.
You asked for it, dear reader, and you got it: it's the triumphant return of dB Magazine's Big Indoor Cinema! After the roaring success of last year's season we've decided to expand it in conjunction with our pals at the Mercury Cinema, kicking off with 'High Fidelity' on Tues 27 July and following up every month until November. The plan so far includes The Who's mighty 'Quadrophenia' (Tues 24 Aug) and Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' (Tues 28 Sept), and each evening begins with a viewing of our local product. What better thing could there be to do on a Tuesday night? Nothing, that's what.
On to the CD launches, then: Junior are just putting the finishing touches on their new effort, which will be set free at the Gov on Sat 31 July.
There's sibling double-launch action afoot at the Jade Monkey on Sat 31 July when the brothers Banham: Matt (aka No Through Road) and Stevie (aka Matt's Little Brother) both launch their new efforts, joined by Brillig, Paper Tiger and interstate visitors Teen God.
Not so much a CD launch, more of a farewell: The Basics' CD 'Moments Of Precious Clarity' is out, and to celebrate head Basic Josh Arcus (him out of EdisonMusic) is... moving to Canada. So: come along and bid him adieu at the Jade Monkey on Sun 18 July as the Basics play their last show in a good long while, accompanied by Sal Paradise.
Out of the ashes of Anatone come Velveteen Habit, complete with a full-length, 14-track album ('Portraits & Poetry') all ready to be launched at the Jade Monkey on Thurs 5 Aug, with support from Andrew P Street and The Seeds Of Babylon.
And that's not all - expect word shortly on CD launches for The Hot Lies, Mere Theory and Enemy Of?.
The Beautiful Girls have been wowing US audiences with their blend of folk and funk, but they'll be back in South Australia for a couple of shows shortly: in fact, they'll be at the Crown Hotel at Victor Harbor on Thurs 29 July and the Governor Hindmarsh on Fri 30 July.
More for the no-Adelaide-shows-you-bastards list: Preston School Of Industry are set to snub us in September, while The Streets don't even acknowledge our presence in August - and neither do Supergrass, Ben Kweller or Hoobastank. Same goes for Belle & Sebastian, Blonde Redhead and McLusky in July.Cheers, bastards.
Thankfully there are some tours that see fit to come to our neck of the woods - like Spiderbait, who'll be bringing their chart-topping, up-rocking sounds to the Adelaide UniBar on Sat 4 Sept, along with Goodshirt and the Ground Components.
Another band that have noticed that Adelaide exists is Muse, who are following up their Big Day Out triumph with a national tour that hits Thebarton Theatre on Mon 6 Sept.
Similarly, The Blackeyed Peas seem to consider that it ain't a party unless Adelaide is invited - which would explain why they'll be at Thebarton Theatre on Tues 12 Oct.
And Grinspoon wouldn't miss Adelaide in a blue fit, now would they? After all, there's a new single (Hard Act To Follow) and a forthcoming album ('Chills, Thrills And Sunday Pills'), so they'd want to pat us on the head at Heaven on Mon 30 Aug, surely?
Since their new single Devil Song is gaining them friends all over the country (and there's an album due in August), Theredsunband are swinging into Adelaide for a show at the Jade Monkey on Thurs 15 July, with support from Andrew P Street.
Stuff from Puff: Oasis have scrapped much of the album they've been working on for the last 12 months with producers Death In Vegas and are starting again - all four remaining members are said to be contributing songs... Some sources are stating that Guns'n'Roses' long, long, long awaited album 'Chinese Democracy' will be out in November, assuming that sole remaining founder member Axl Rose doesn't scrap it or get distracted by something shiny. The album has taken seven years to record so far, which Puff helpfully points out is longer than The Beatles took to release their entire output... The Strokes, meanwhile, are hard at work on album number three: they've built a studio in their rehearsal room and will spend the next few months jamming on ideas... R. Kelly has been given the court's permission to tour the US behind his 'Happy People / U Saved Me' double album in August on the condition that he checks in daily with his parole officer. Kelly is due to stand trial on child pornography charges in September... Whilst in the courts, a bench warrant was issued for the arrest of Courtney Love after she failed to appear in court on Fri 9 July on assault charges, beating her previous best of arriving five hours late. Her long-suffering defence attorney claims she was "confused" as to whether she'd need to appear in New York or Los Angeles. Love is also currently up on two separate charges for possession of drugs... And continuing the legal theme, the mother and widow of murdered rapper The Notorious B.I.G (aka Christopher Wallace) are taking the LAPD to court. Violetta Wallace and singer Faith Evans have been cleared to take their Wrongful Death suit to trial in October. They allege that the unsolved shooting death of B.I.G seven years was a police-assisted hit by former officer David Mack (who is currently doing 14 years for armed robbery)... and David Bowie is recovering from emergency heart surgery after it was discovered that the pinched nerve in his shoulder that had caused the cancellation of several European dates was in fact an acutely blocked artery. Word is he'll be back on the road next month.
Speaking of Mr Bowie, a whole slew of Adelaide's musical types are paying tribute to the Thin White Duke and raising money for three-d radio at the same time: Bowie-A-Rama is happening at Fowlers Live on Thurs 22 July with an all-star lineup of (deep breath) Southpaw, The Ramonettes, Brillig with Leigh Stardust, Tuscadero, Burning Sons Of Shiva, The Tunnel Visionaries, Baby Doll, King Daddy and Monster Truck (featuring folks out of Career Girls, The Undecided and Parlour). Three songs apiece, no waiting.
Wondering who the heck these Love Outside Andromeda people are that are supporting Epicure at the Gov on Sat 17 Aug. Well, they used to be known as Andromeda, but discovered that there were already several other bands and a galaxy that had beaten them to the name, so they changed it. Simple, really. In any case, they're the ones that did that Something White & Sigmund song that you liked so much.
Reeeeorrr! Duk-dukka-dukka-schnooooowww! Squee-squiddly-squeee! Those are just some of the noises you'll be able to enjoy at Thebarton Theatre on Sat 24 July when Steve Vai will get all pyrotechnic on his axe.
Hardcore metallers Off Minor will no doubt tear the Enigma Bar a new one, or at least enlarge the existing old one, when they hit on Thurs 15 July with Love Like Electrocution, The Night Creeps and Eyes Like Black Stars.
Looking forward to seeing the legendary Detroit rockers the MC5 on Tues 27 July (with supports Young Heart Attack and Baby Doll)? Well, be advised that the venue has changed to Fowlers Live - and also bring an extra $20 with you, since the band will be recording the show live and then selling CDs of the gig: all within minutes of the show finishing! As The Bard might say, what brave new world that has such merchandising spinoffs in't…
Youth Group are doing a lap of the country in support of their sterling new 'Skeleton Jar' CD and they'll be at Fowlers Live on Sat 7 Aug with touring buddies I [Love] Space and expatriots Bit By Bats.
The eastern states have been going crazy for Marcel Borrack and his rather charming 'Help' CD (featuring If I Was An Ant) - and you can see why by catching him at the Grace Emily on Sat 17 July, with The Vandas.
Refugee support group The Hills Circle Of Friends are holding a benefit concert to raise funds for their work with refugees (both in detention and the community): Quartito Azul headline the night and you can get caught up in a swirl of tango and support the important work that's going on by getting along to the Gov on Wed 21 July.
Regurgitator are about to be sealed up in a bubble dome in Melbourne's Federation Square and not let out until they record their next album (Puff's not joking), but before they get zipped into their jumpsuits and escorted in they've done a new single - Bong In My Eye - and a show at the Enigma Bar on Fri 6 Aug with Spod and Spatial Monkey.
More stuff from Puff: John Flansburgh from They Might Be Giants has put together a compilation to raise funds for progressive and pro-voting organisations in the US (including Common Assets and moveon.org): 'Future Soundtrack For America' features new and/or unreleased tracks by the likes of REM, Ben Kweller, Will.I.Am from the Blackeyed Peas, Sleater-Kinney, Tom Waits, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, David Byrne, Jimmy Eat World and many more, even including a posthumous track from Elliot Smith. TMBG contribute a cover of William Henry Harrison's 1840 campaign song Tippecanoe And Tyler Too... The Mess Hall are about to head overseas on tour, with new drummer Cec Condon replacing founding member AJ... Things don't seem to have calmed down in The Vines' camp of late: after their infamous on-stage spat, Triple M blackballing and the cancellation of their US tour, the band have now withdrawn from the Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK citing physical and mental exhaustion... Wet Wet Wet are reforming for a best-off tour and an album of new material... And with the cancellation of Lollapolooza, most of the headliners have lined up tours of their own (Sonic Youth, Modest Mouse, The Walkmen) - not so the Flaming Lips, who are using the unexpected break to work on both their new album (songs more or less complete at the moment include Space Bible and Mr Ambulance Driver) and their film 'Christmas On Mars.'
Australian folk goes head-to-head at the Governor Hindmarsh when The Bushwackers take on The Borderers on Fri 16 July.
Machine Translations were here not long ago supporting Clare Bowditch but now they're coming back on their own headling tour in support of the excellent 'Venus Traps Fly' - catch them at Jive on Sat 31 July, along with Disaster Plan and Brer Mouse.
The charming lad known as Josh Kelley will be getting all singer-songwriterish at Fowlers on Sat 17 July.
The Lucksmiths must get kind of antsy if they're not touring: they're heading out around the nation again, popping into the Jade Monkey on Fri 30 July for a show with Paper Tiger.
Also on the touring trail are The Fauves, who've just returned with their new album (cunningly entitled 'The Fauves') and a tour that hits the Enigma Bar on Sat 31 July.
Puff's already camping outside the Mercury for good seats to the Big Indoor Cinema events - and if you want to share what's bubbling in Puff's Six Million Dollar Man thermos of Rock, you'll need to...
