Wild Billy Childish & The Buff Medways
1914/Steady The Buffs
Transcopic/Ivy League/Slanted
"Wild" Billy Childish is the real thing: a punk rock survivor with a burning desire to create, with a paintbrush in one hand and a cheap guitar in the other. The fine people at Slanted have decided to introduce the work of the Buff Medways to Australian audiences via this handsomely packaged double-CD set and the cumulative effect is like a party pack of Doritos: it's salty, spicy, crunchy and initially you feel like you could keep going forever... but you soon find you've had more than enough before you're even half way through.
Both records are primitive three-chord power trio thrash, with Childish howling his way through would-be garage classics like Vanessa Does Favours and Nurse Julie (and Spinal Tap reference or not, Saucy Jack is the early Who single that never was) with barely a pause for breath as the Buff Medways thump away behind him, providing a bare bones framework for his tinny guitar and distorted vocals. Why the Medways are rocking the WWI-era look is open to conjecture, but forget Jet and the Von Bondies: this is how garage music should sound, like dusty, slightly warped vinyl found in the back of an op shop. It's delicious, sure - but don't blame me if you're craving something sweeter five songs in.
