Slipknot
Vol.3 : The Subliminal Verses
Roadrunner/UMG
To be completely honest, this is one of the hardest reviews I've been faced with. I hold many mixed emotions toward Slipknot's third album. After my initial listen to 'The Subliminal Verses' I was far from impressed but, after accepting that this wasn't the brutal, shove-pins-in-your-eyes-while-gargling-broken-glass recording I had hoped for, perhaps there was still some form of salvation hidden away in there somewhere.
The album opens with the solemn Prelude 3.0 and momentarily lifts the pace with The Blister Exists and Three Nil. Things dull back down again with first single Duality, which pretty much sets the tone for the remainder of the recording. Although the music is tame compared to past releases, there are still a few strong tracks like Before I Forget and The Virus Of Life that boast impressively infectious riffs. It's also clear that the group have evolved as musicians, pushing the boundaries of their individual talents.
However, Slipknot's very dominance in the thrash metal scene makes it hard to look at this release as anything but lacking in comparison to past endeavours. 'The Subliminal Verses' would probably appeal more to fans of Stone Sour than Slipknot, as they've have definitely abandoned that thrash-metal edge which they once had, replacing it with a much more melodic (and tighter) sound. Not the album I was so eagerly anticipating, but from an objective viewpoint Slipknot still exhibit a fair degree of talent this time around.
