Last Days Of April
If You Lose It
Bad Taste/Roadshow/Sony
Occasionally you come across someone and find them highly likable but can't quite put your finger on why. This phenomenon occurs for bands too: I find it difficult to articulate why I enjoy Last Days Of April, but 'If You Lose It' is another example of how strangely likeable their music is.
After the complex and eclectic rock of 'Angel Youth' (their third album), they followed with the simpler, mellowed out 'Ascend To The Stars.' 'If You Lose It' splits the difference: LDOA continue to progress, yet maintain their unique sound (and it is especially joyous to have a new recording containing Karl Larson's distinctive breathy vocals and slight Swedish accent).
The album opens with the single It's On Everything, a mid-paced number with a neat interaction between the guitar and bass. Like much of LDOA's work the subtle hook in Been Here All Time won't grab you till about the fourth or fifth listen but the highlight is the indie rock brilliance of Your Anyone which stands out from its opening swagger to the catchy dual guitar lick, finishing up with an outro of fat atmospheric distortion. If You is a sweet and delicate ballad with heartfelt lyrics and the album rounds off with Fast, So Fast, another delightful ballad reminiscent of (if not quite as perfect) as 'Ascend to the Stars'' At Your Most Beautiful. In all, 'If You Lose It' is another solid record from Last Days Of April reminding us afresh of the rare gems they provide.
