Puff 'n' Stuff.
Those noisy kids we know and love as Hit The Jackpot (who recently supported Sonic Youth in Perth, no less) are launching their self-titled CD at the Exeter Hotel Rundle St on Fri 2 July along with Melbourne noise types True Radical Miracle (featuring that lanky heartthrob Scott O'Hara, late of locals Hardy Coxon) and Oh! Belgium, both of whom play the Crown & Anchor the previous evening (Thurs 1 July).
Insect Seeking Technology also have a new CD to launch, and that's exactly what they'll do with it on Fri 9 July at Jive, along with The Seeds Of Babylon and Nun Nicer.
Local funk sorts Magma are calling it a day, what with members moving interstate and traveling the world and what-not, but they're doing one last hurrah at the Crown & Sceptre on Sat 10 July.
That charming gentleman Alex Lloyd didn't get much of a chance to tour for 'Distant Light,' what with doing things like getting married and having his first child, but now he's back in the mood for rock: hence his two gigs at the Gov on Wed 30 June and Thurs 1 July, supported by Clare Bowditch.
Daddy, daddy, get me out of here: Necromancy plunges Into The Labyrinth on Sat 10 July as reality DJs Empusa, Cenobite and pals celebrate David Bowie's enduring cinematic triumph with the finest in goth, synthpop, EBM and dark alternative. Puff just hopes that they don't dance magic dance...
Speaking of Mr Bowie, Fowlers Live and DJ Ian Bell are hosting a tribute night to the Thin White Duke on Thurs 22 July for three-d radio. The likes of King Daddy, The Ramonettes, Baby Doll, Brillig and Monster Truck (featuring members of Career Girls, The Undecided and Parlour), among others, will be pulling out their favourite Bowie covers for the night - check the next issue of dB Magazine for all the details.
Don't forget: if you have tickets to John Butler, he's playing on Wed 30 June at Thebarton Theatre with Ms Missy Higgins in support. Of course, if you don't have a ticket yet then Puff's just rubbing it in, since it's completely sold out. Ain't Puff a stinker?
Puff's rather looking forward to the DKT/MC5 show - not just because the MC5 were possibly the most important band in American rock'n'roll, and not just because they're being supported by Young Heart Attack. No, Puff's also intrigued because they've slotted in some very interesting folks to fill the shoes of the late Rob Tyner (vocals) and Fred 'Sonic' Smith (guitar) - both Evan Dando and Mudhoney's Mark Arm will sub for Tyner, and Smith will be represented by... Buddy Holly-alike Marshall Crenshaw? Either way, it'll all make sense at Heaven on Tues 27 July.
US ultra-indie types The Microphones are making a surprise visit to Adelaide for a show at the Jade Monkey on Fri 9 July with No Through Road and Iron Man & Skull - and check out Lenin Simos' interview with them exclusively at dbmagazine.com.au. Phil Elvrum's in there somewhere, honest.
In the last issue of dB Magazine Steven Hocking described 'The Beginning Of The End' by Gentle Ben & His Sensitive Side as "the best new music I've heard from an alternative Australian band this year." Clearly Ben and the Siders heard the call since they're coming to Adelaide for two shows at the Grace Emily on Sat 3 July (with Conway Savage and Maurice Frawley) and Sun 4 July (with The Shandy Butchers).
Yes, that's the Conway Savage: him out of the Bad Seeds, him what's just released 'Wrong Man's Hands': not only is he playing at the Grace on Sat 3 July, he's interviewed by D. Stuart Gravestock at dbmagazine.com.au right this freakin' minute!
Stuff from Puff: Much to the shock of practically everybody, the touring Lollapallooza Festival in the US has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales, despite a lineup that includes the likes of PJ Harvey, The Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Sonic Youth and Morrissey. "My heart is broken," lamented festival founder Perry Farrell... Speaking of Farrell, his Jane's Addiction band mates confirmed that the band have definitely split up (again) via guitarist Dave Navarro's website... Also on the cancellation trail are Britney Spears (who's pulled her entire US tour after badly injuring her knee in a fall during a video shoot) and, closer to home, Papa M (who cancelled their entire Australian tour due to illness)... Speaking of Britney, it's been confirmed that she's engaged to dancer boyfriend Kevin Federline. Federline's ex-girlfriend, actress Shar Jackson, is due to give birth to their second child in July, while Britney's last marriage (to old friend Jason Alexander) lasted 55 hours)... Catholic-raised Madonna has decided that she needs to "attach [herself] to the energy of a different name" and has chosen to go under the Hebrew name of "Esther" from here on in, due to her involvement in new-agey Jewish mysticism Kabbalah... Despite delays due to frontman Jeff Tweedy's rehab for painkiller addiction, Wilco's 'A Ghost Is Born' will be in store on Mon 5 July... And the first brand new Pixies song is now downloadable from Apple's iTunes: it's called Bam Thwok and it was written by bassist Kim Deal (interesting, since Deal's determination for the Pixies to include more of her material was one of the main reasons for the band's split in 1992). The NME quoted frontman Frank Black as saying "Recording it was a nice way for us to break the ice... The recording process was very relaxed and it didn't feel like twelve years had passed." Awwww...
Weird-ass musical experimentation will be the order of the day when Baseball (featuring Cameron Potts, late of Ninety-Nine) come to town in support of their 'Gods And Stars, Priests And Kings' album. They're at the Jade Monkey on Fri 16 July (with Wolf & Cub and Hit The Jackpot), then hit the Exeter for a show on Sat 17 July (with Deep Mud Vibe and Straight To Video).
Ah, that Pete Doherty. The troubled frontman of The Libertines is a living episode of 'Cops.' First, he's arrested for the burglary of his band mate's home. He's jailed. He's released. He goes into rehab for his drug addiction. He leaves rehab. The band replace him for tours. He rejoins the band. He quits the band. He goes back into rehab. He quits rehab after a couple of days and moves to France to go into rehab. He quits rehab and goes back to the UK. He does a gig with The Libertines. He decides that the best place to go into rehab for opiate addiction is Thailand (at the Thamkrabok Monastery, to be precise). He lasts a couple of days and vanishes. He resurfaces in Britain... and is pulled over by police for a driving offence. Police allegedly found a flick knife on his person and arrested him. Puff can't wait for the next installment: predictions include a wacky jewel heist, or the discovery of a long lost identical twin brother.
They were just here with The Dissociatives, now they're coming back with Ground Components and Steve Parkin: they're Little Birdy and they're at the Enigma Bar on Thurs 8 July.
Poptastic NZ-via-Melbourne sorts Betchadupa and finally coming to Adelaide after so many empty promises: Puff's reliably informed that they will be at the Enigma Bar on Sat 3 July, with Brisbane madmen Vanlustbader and locals The Departure.
The next Patterns In Static show is a-happening at the Jade Monkey on Sat 3 July with Melbourne's The Bites (featuring ex-Parlour/Miltons/Canino skinsman Simon Parker) and Queensland's Iron On alongside locals The Sunroom and DJ Matt Hillside.
Lovers of sweet, sweet song should probably ensure that their mitts are on a ticket to Sarah Brightman, who'll be bringing the soprano party to the EntCent on Thurs 8 July.
Since her 'Tasty' album is doing the business at the moment, the r'n'b sensation Kelis is set to hit Heaven on Sun 11 July, complete with her all-female six-piece band and dancers.
Hardcore aficionados, take note: Off Minor are coming to town for a show on Thurs 15 July with the equally aggressive Love Like Electrocution, The Night Creeps and Eyes Like Black Stars.
The Beautiful Girls are continuing their trek across the US at the moment, but Puff's assured that they'll be back in Australia in time for their shows at The Crown Hotel in Victor Harbor (Thurs 29 July) and the Governor Hindmarsh (Fri 30 July).
More Stuff From Puff: Jerry Cantrell (ex-Alice In Chains) and Billy Duffy (ex-The Cult) have formed a band called Cardboard Vampyres. They're doing a low-key US tour, mainly playing AIC and Cult songs with a few other choice covers thrown in...New Jersey's recent Summer Jam showcase (featuring the likes of Alicia Keys, G-Unit and Ludacris) was enlivened by an on-stage tantrum by 50 Cent, who dissed fellow performer R Kelly before throwing down his mic and flouncing offstage... Jet are about to embark on a massive US tour with support from Canadian power-pop legends Sloan and fellow Melbournians The Anyones... Minnie Driver - yes, the actor - is about to release her debut album 'Everything I've Got In My Pocket' through Zoe Records (Juliana Hatfield's label). She's backed by members of The Wallflowers and Pete Yorn's band... Rapper DMX was arrested on Thurs 24 June for attempted to steal a car at JFK Airport (allegedly DMX was trying to pass himself off as a federal agent at the time, bless him)... Eric Clapton has set a record for the most money ever paid for a guitar at auction: his Stratocaster "Blackie" (featured on the cover of 'Slowhand' and Clapton's live guitar of choice through most of the 70s and 80s) raised $US959,500 for the Crossroads drug and alcohol treatment facility in Antigua... TLC have found a perfect, classy way to honour their late colleague Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez (who died in a car accident in 2002): they're replacing her with whoever they find via a reality TV show. Yes, exactly like INXS... and from old-school beats to old-school games: The Beastie Boys have uploaded a 'Frogger'-esque game called 'Triple Trouble' to the Capitol Records website in which one must get a Beastie Boy across the road to a peace rally whilst avoiding getting run over by tanks containing George W Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice. Ch-check it out at capitolrecords.com/beastieboys/tripletrouble/.
Once upon a time Mark Holden and Ross Ryan shared a house in Sydney. Now they're sharing a stage in Adelaide on their punfully-named 'Idol & Idle' tour - catch that bloke what judges Australian Idol and that other bloke what did I Am Pegasus at the Eagle on the Hill on Sat 3 July.
Booster are a new band on the block (although Puff, being something of a pooper of parties, might mention that they look suspiciously like Sean & Drew Kemp of The Castonets and Craig Lewis of Kaleidoscope) and they're playing their first show at the Enigma Bar on Fri 2 July, along with Melbourne visitors Pixelated and locals Sumi and Nugget.
Muscle Car just can't be trusted: Puff turn away for a second and they invite a bunch of beer-swilling rock pigs from Wollongong to our fine town. Turbodegenerate and Muscle Car will be a-rockin' the Crown & Anchor on Fri 9 July and the they're handballed to Star 10 Hash for a show at the Exeter on Rundle St on Sat 10 July. Hmmmph. Young people these days...
Stop press! The Music Managers Forum are holding their Austrade-related forum ("Getting grants & funding & what to do with it") at Caos Café on Thurs 8 July: it kicks off at 7.30 and costs a mere $5 (or free for MMF members). Git some larnin' in ya, musical types.
So much to do, so little time - and you could be doing it, provided that you...
